They Won It Again –Fifth Graders Capture Tourney Title For Second Straight Year

The Newtown fifth grade boys’ travel basketball team captured the 26th Annual Yorktown Athletic Club Winter Classic for the second consecutive year, with a triumph at the Brewster Sports Center in New York this past weekend.

Newtown used its intense full-court pressure and fluid transition offense to dominate the competition throughout the weekend in its four victories.

In the first game of pool play, Newtown jumped out to a quick 14-5 lead at the half and never looked back against Seton in a 34-14 win.

Newtown was led offensively by Michael Cotton, Jimmy Davies, and James Doyle with contributions of 6 points each. Luke Barrett and Robert Disibio chipped in with 4 points each.

The second game of pool play, against St. Augustine’s, was a similar story for the Newtowners. Newtown pressured the opponent into countless turnovers which led to easy transition buckets in route to a 21-7 halftime lead en route to the victory.

Robert Disibio led all scorers with 12 points, while Jimmy Davies and Michael Cotton chipped in with 8 and 6 points, respectively. Dan Mason also contributed with 4 points of his own.

The third and final game of pool play brought on a very big and physical Yorktown squad. Newtown started off slowly and trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The complexion of the game changed, however, in the second quarter with Newtown’s pressure defense leading to easy fast-break opportunities. Newtown went on a 12-4 run and took a 20-15 lead into the locker room at intermission. In the fourth quarter, Newtown closed out the game on an 11-6 run to earn the victory by a final score of 35-24.

Luke Barrett led all scorers with 12 points, while Robert Disibio and Aidan Moulder tallied 9 and 8 points each.

In the Championship Game, Newtown defeated Seton again, this time by a final score of 49-32. Newtown used an explosive 32-16 run in the middle of the game to cruise to the title.

Disibio led the scoring with 13 points, and Barrett and Mason contributed with 8 and 6 points of their own.
