Josephine Mescal Braun

Cherished Mother

And Grandmother

Josephine Mescal Braun, 87, died January 30, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs Braun was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Theodore A. Braun. She was born November 6, 1923, in New York City, a daughter of Irish immigrant parents, Hannah (Gallagher) and James Mescal. She grew up in Ozone Park, Queens, with six siblings.

Mrs Braun graduated from Business College in New York City and worked for the American Red Cross and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She met her husband while at the Navy Yard and was married at St Clements Church in Queens, then moved to Newtown in August 1946. She and her husband owned and operated a radio store in Sandy Hook.

 She was a devoted wife and homemaker, raising and directing six children.

Her children and their spouses are Dr Kevin and Phyllis Braun of Newtown, Claire and Michael Hughes of Sandy Hook, Timothy and Jessica Braun of Sandy Hook, John and Patricia Braun of Glen Mills, Penn., Thomas and Deirdre Braun of Woodbury, and James and Maria Braun of Southbury.

Twelve beloved grandchildren also survive Mrs Braun. She devoted much of her retirement years to their well-being. She always brightened when in their company. They were enriched by the time spent with her. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11:30 am, Saturday, February 5, at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, Saturday, February 5, at noon. Interment in Newtown Village Cemetery will be in the spring.

Funeral arrangements are in care of The Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
