NHS Basketball Teams To Host Doubleheader On February 7

Due to snow postponing games, Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ basketball team will play a doubleheader at NHS on Monday, February 7. The girls will host Lauralton Hall of Milford in a game originally scheduled to have been played on January 28 but postponed because Hall did not have school that day. The boys will make up a game with Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, which was originally to have been played on February 1. The girls’ game begins at 5:30 pm and the boys are scheduled to tip-off at 7:15 pm.

Newtown boys’ coach John Quinn said he is looking forward to seeing a large, supportive crowd on hand for what he believes is the school’s first such doubleheader in his 15 years of coaching at NHS.

The boys entered into this week coming off a 70-49 loss at nonconference foe Crosby of Waterbury on January 28. Kyle Wilcox had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Josh Engler had 13 points and six rebounds in the game. David Lucia, captain of the junior varsity team, got some court action and scored his first varsity points. Quinn said his team will take something from the setback because the players were exposed to a strong opponent, and should be well-prepared for the toughest of the South-West Conference games that remain. Newtown had won three straight games and that winning streak is intact in terms of SWC play heading into its scheduled Friday, February 4, game at Brookfield.

The girls carried a three-game winning streak into this week’s games. They were slated to make up their postponed-by-snow on February 1 Kolbe game on Thursday (after The Bee went to press). The girls are scheduled to host Brookfield on Friday, February 4, at 7 pm. The NHS girls last played a game on January 25, when they bested Bethel 68-30.
