Shoplifting Incident

Police report that at about 2:48 pm on January 28, they received a complaint from Walgreens Pharmacy at 49 South Main Street, stating that a shoplifting incident had occurred, so they responded to investigate.

After receiving a description of the person who allegedly had stolen store merchandise and the sedan in which he was traveling, police briefly searched for the man, stopping the vehicle in question near 137 South Main Street, about 1.3 miles south of the pharmacy.

Police said they charged a passenger in that sedan, Nicholas Thurman, 31, of Westfield, Mass., with sixth-degree larceny for allegedly having stolen items including electric toothbrushes, which had an approximate aggregate value of $300.

Following arrest processing, police released Thurman on $1,000 bail for a February 11 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

MV Charges

Police said that while on patrol at about 4:35 pm on January 31, they stopped motorist Eugene F. Casivant, Jr, 36, of Southbury on Pearl Street, near its intersection with Washington Avenue, because the vehicle that he was driving had a defective headlamp.

After investigating, police said they charged Casivant with a automotive headlamp violation and with driving with a suspended license.

Police said they released Casivant on $500 bail for an upcoming court appearance.

Eden Hill Road

A one-vehicle accident occurred about 6:42 pm on January 26 on Eden Hill Road, north of its intersection with Hi Barlow Road, according to police.

Police said motorist Aaron Nezvesky, 21, of 13-A Phyllis Lane was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer SUV southward on Eden Hill Road, when the vehicle slid off the snow-covered roadway and struck a stone wall.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Nezvesky for traveling too fast for conditions.

Under Investigation

Police said this week they are investigating an incident in which a person who was driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) became involved in an accident in Sandy Hook, and then fled the scene of the crash.

Police said the ATV driver was traveling southward on Bennetts Bridge Road, north of its intersection with Gelding Hill Road, about 9:36 pm on January 26, when the ATV went off the southbound road shoulder and collided with a Connecticut Light & Power Company utility box near 43 Bennetts Bridge Road, causing an isolated electric power outage.

The unidentified ATV driver then left the scene of the crash, police said. Police are investigating the incident.

Honda Damaged

During an ice storm on the morning of January 18, while it was parked unoccupied in the parking lot in front of the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street, an unknown motorist drove into a 2011 Honda Accord sedan, damaging the Honda’s right front door, according to police.

Police ask any witnesses to the incident or anyone with knowledge of the offending driver’s identity to contact investigating police Patrol Officer Gladys Pisani at 203-426-5841.

Sedan Off Road

Motorist Ashley Ballard, 25, of Danbury was driving a 2000 Honda Accord sedan westward on Wasserman Way, just east of its intersection with Mile Hill Road South, at about 10:30 am on January 31, when while negotiating a curve in the roadway, she lost control of the auto on the slippery pavement and entered the eastbound lane, striking a traffic sign, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Ballard a court summons for driving with a suspended license, and also verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Truck Hits Building

Police report that during snowy conditions at about 10:30 am on January 24, a town-owned 2007 Ford F-50 pickup truck, which was driven by Willard Jacobs, 47, of Naugatuck, was backing up along the rear side of Middle Gate School at 7 Cold Spring Road, when the truck struck a rear corner of the building, breaking a window. There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Tractor-Trailer

At about 1 pm on January 30, police Officer Jason Flynn, 35, who was driving an unmarked 2008 Dodge sedan police vehicle, was stopped and waiting a red traffic on eastbound Wasserman Way, when trucker Ronald Roman, 54, of West Haven, who was driving a 2015 Mack tractor-trailer truck, attempted to make a left turn from Berkshire Road onto Wasserman Way, police said.

However, in seeking to make the turn, the truck’s trailer struck the police car, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Roman a written warning for making an improper turn.

Gelding Hill Road

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Gelding Hill Road about 5:40 pm on January 30.

Police said motorist Jake Lapp, 16, of 44 Charter Ridge, who was driving a 2001 Jeep Wrangler SUV northward on Gelding Hill Road, struck a snow bank and then crossed over the road’s center line and collided in the southbound lane with motorist Stephen Zvon, 62, of 4 Rockywood Drive, who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Equinox SUV.

Zvon was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Sandy Hook firefighters responded to the accident. Police said Lapp received an infraction for failure to drive to the right.

Evading Responsibility

Police report they responded to the Big Y supermarket parking lot at 6 Queen Street about 3:30 pm on February 1 after receiving a report of a motor vehicle accident there.

Police said their investigation showed that a parked, unoccupied black 2007 Mazda CX-7 SUV had been struck by an unknown motorist sometime between 3 and 3:25 pm, after which the unknown motorist drove away from the scene.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the motorist’s identity to contact Officer William Crone at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Intersection Crash

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Jordan Hill Road and Berkshire Road about 6:37 pm on February 3.

Police report that motorist Charles E. Lewis, Jr, 29, of Shelton, who was driving a 2014 GMC Terrain SUV, was attempting to make a left turn from northbound Jordan Hill Road onto westbound Berkshire Road, as motorist Kevin Minto, 32, of New Haven was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo sedan eastward on Berkshire Road.

The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Lewis a written warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

School Bus

Police report a collision involving a school bus carrying several students and a cargo truck on Philo Curtis Road, near its intersection with Pearl Street, about 9:48 am on February 3.

Police said trucker David Coleman, 44, of Branford was driving a 2008 Freightliner van southward on Philo Curtis Road, as school bus driver Linda Brereton, 50, of 6 Edgewood Drive was driving a 2013 Bluebird school bus, which is owned by All-Star Transportation, northward there.

The Freightliner skidded on the snow-covered roadway and struck the bus, police said.

Police said they issued Coleman a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions and for failure to drive to the right on a curve.

A two-vehicle accident that happened about 7:16 am on February 4 at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Mt Pleasant Terrace caused travel delays during the morning rush. Police said the accident involved motorist Martin Basso, 23, of 21 Taunton Lake Drive, who was driving a 2006 Saab 9-3 sedan, and motorist Jennifer Duran, 18, of Danbury, who was driving a 2010 Honda Accord sedan, pictured. Police said Basso was injured in the accident. Details on how the collision occurred were not available from police before the deadline for this edition of The Bee. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the on-duty paramedic responded to the scene. Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters also responded. Police said the accident is under investigation.
