The work of Mary Barrett Anders, who presented Asian brushwork classes at HealingNewtown, is the focus of an exhibit of her work at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown. Located in the showcase outside the children’s library, the exhibit — a collaboration between the library and Newtown Cultural Arts Commission —  will be on display through March 1 during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am-8 pm; Friday, 11 am-5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am-5 pm; and Sunday, 12-5 pm.

Born in Greenwich, Ms Barrett traveled and lived overseas from childhood, always returning home to Connecticut. She holds a degree in French Studies from Smith College and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris her junior year, earning a CPLF.

While living in Korea for two years, she studied traditional Korean brushwork painting. She extended her studies by working under Chinese Master Jiashon Mu in Rockville, Md., where she was a member of the Bamboo & Plum Blossom printing group.

Her name seal in the bottom right corner of her work represents her Korean name, “Parem,” meaning “hope” (in red) and her Chinese name “MayLee,” or “Mary” (in black).

Ms Anders is a member of Greenwich Art Society and The Society of Creative Arts in Newtown (SCAN), and is on the board of Kent Art Association.

She is also the founder and owner of Parem Asian Brushwork. To see more of her work, visit www.paremhwah.com.

Mary Barrett Anders stands among some of her Korean and Chinese style brushwork paintings. A collection of Ms Anders’s works is on view until March 1 at C.H. Booth Library.
