Residents of Fairfield County can knock an item off their travel to-do list Saturday, February 8, with post offices in the region offering an extra dose of convenience to prospective travelers.

In addition to maintaining regular business hours, three post offices will host events with a dedicated line serving passport applicants only. Hawleyville Post Office, 23 Barnabas Road, will be offering the service from 8 am until 5 pm.

Also hosting the event will be Bayview Post Office, 115 Boston Avenue in Bridgeport, from noon to 3 pm; and Greenwich Post Office, 29 Valley Drive in Greenwich, from 1 to 4 pm.

To obtain a passport, applicants need to bring with them proper proof of American citizenship. This must be a certified birth certificate issued by the city, county, or state; a previous US passport; a certificate of citizenship; or a naturalization certificate. Note: A hospital-issued birth certificate alone is not acceptable.

Applicants will also need to have proof of their identity. This must be a recently issued US passport; a recently issued naturalization certificate; a recently issued certificate of citizenship; or a current valid driver’s license, government-issued ID, or military photo ID.

A photocopy of the proof of identity will additionally be needed. Each applicant must bring with them a photocopy of the front and back of the ID that will be presented at the time of passport application submission.

The passport application requires a recent color passport photograph, measuring 2 by 2 inches, of the applicant. The post office will offer passport photo service for an additional $15.

Customers should download the passport application at travel.state.gov and complete it beforehand. Do not sign the application in advance, however. That step must be done in front of the passport clerk.

All applicants must appear in person, including minors.

Each passport application for an adult must be accompanied by a check or money order for $110 made payable to the US Department of State, and a $35 acceptance fee made payable to USPS. Fees for children under 16 are $80, payable to the US Department of State, and $35 payable to USPS.

The cost to expedite processing at the Department of State is $60 paid per application, in addition to required fees.

Customers can call 800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777) or go usps.com to get the location of other nearby passport Post Offices and their passport customer service hours.

Passport customers may also check the US State Department’s web site at travel.state.gov to obtain additional information. Passport information is also available by phone, in English and Spanish, by calling the National Passport Information Center toll-free at 877-487-2778.

Those planning to attend a passport event at Hawleyville Post Office on Satuday should first download an application that can be found at the US Department of State website.
