“Second Structure Fire In A Week, This Time On Hanover Road,” by Shannon Hicks and John Voket, published January 29. The second major structure fire in town within a week swept through a Hanover Road residence in the area of Silver City Road on January 29, drawing volunteers from all five local fire companies, as well as mutual aid from several neighboring towns, including Brookfield and Southbury. “UPDATE: State, Town Offices Closing Monday As Nor’easter Orlena Positions To Pummel Region,” by John Voket, published January 31. First Selectman Dan Rosenthal was closing town offices and advising residents who could work from home at least through the following day to do so and to be sure electronics are charged and there are adequate supplies as a powerful Nor’easter dubbed Orlena positioned itself to pummel Newtown with heavy winds and snow. “By Name Or By Taste, Emalyn Sweets Is All About The Blend,” by John Voket, published February 3. When it came time to transition a longtime hobby of making scrumptious sweets from various chocolate blends into an actual business, Newtown resident Linda Sparaco said she simply blended some initials and a modification of her name together and Emalyn Sweets was born. “Former Resident, Dancer Turned PA Starring In Video Memorial,” by John Voket, published February 6. Former Newtown resident and accomplished dancer turned physician assistant Mia Malin has led an interesting life, most recently finding a creative outlet in her art that helps relieve the stress and angst she experiences helping care for critical COVID-19 patients in a Chattanooga, Tenn., intensive care unit. “Community Center Hiking Out-Of-Town User Rates,” by John Voket, published February 1. With little discussion, the Board of Selectmen authorized a rate hike for out-of-town users of the Newtown Community Center, effective March 1. Depending on the membership category, those users will see a $3 to $8 increase in their monthly membership fee.
