A food and clothing drive planned for last weekend by members of Congregation Adath Israel has been rescheduled to Sunday, February 14, following inclement weather.

Congregation Adath Israel of Newtown’s Share and Care Committee is inviting residents of the surrounding communities to participate in the special event, which will still be held in the Adath Israel parking lot, at 115 Huntingtown Road, from 10 am until noon.

To ensure everyone’s safety in light of COVID-19, committee members will collect donations from participants’ cars.

Food will be delivered to the Monroe and Newtown food banks. New and gently used coats along with hats, scarves, gloves, and boots are welcome. Adath Israel is teaming up with the Association of Religious Communities in Danbury (ARC) to distribute clothing to area shelters.

Adath Israel held food and clothing drives in September and October of last year, in addition to drives in 2019 and in 2018.

Sue Morse, head of the Share and Care Committee, said she and others “are delighted to be able to help support individuals who rely on area food pantries and shelters.

“While there always seems to be a need, the spread of COVID-19 has significantly increased these needs,” she added. “Hosting these drives is one way of demonstrating Adath Israel’s commitment to tikkun olam, a Jewish concept that encourages acts of kindness to better our communities and the world we live in.”
