Breakfast To Benefit Shelter
DANBURY â In conjunction with its third anniversary, the Shelter of the Cross will hold a charity breakfast at 7:30 am on Monday, February 26, at the Holiday Inn, Danbury. The keynote speakers will be James Parkel, president elect, National Board of Directors AARP, and US Rep James Maloney, D-5th District.
Mayor Gene Eriquez will be presented with a Certificate of Appreciation, thanking the City of Danbury for its support of the Shelter of the Cross.
Since it opened in March of 1998, Shelter of the Cross, an assisted, non-denominational home for older (58+) homeless men and women in the Greater Danbury Area, has successfully helped 21 clients. The goals of Shelter of the Cross are to house and rehabilitate individuals and to reintegrate them back into the community by moving them into permanent and independent housing within a maximum of two years.
In Danbury, approximately 250 adults per year are homeless. Five to ten percent of this population is elderly. Over the past three years, Shelter of the Cross has assisted 18 clients in receiving financial entitlements and nine clients in finding permanent housing. Their services aim to restore hope, pride, dignity, and confidence in their residents and the future.
