Alan R.      Mitchell, Sr

Alan R. Mitchell, Sr, 75, of Tamarack Road, died unexpectedly February 7, in Danbury Hospital.

Mr Mitchell was born in Montclair, N.J., on March 5, 1928, a son of the late Edmund Irving and Irene (Roberts) Mitchell.

He graduated from Montclair High School in 1946, where he was an active Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Alan attended Dartmouth College, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1950.

He served in the US Navy on the Rhine River Patrol in Wiesbaden, Germany, during the Korean War. This is where he met his wife, the late Frances Onita Williams (“Willie”), an Air Force Nurse. Alan and Frances were married for 37 years.

Alan and his family enjoyed residing in the community of Madison, N.J., for several years. While living there, he was an active member of the Church of the Redeemer in Morristown, N.J., for almost 20 years and served as Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #125 in Madison. Alan relocated his family to Newtown in 1980, while working for Union Carbide.

Mr Mitchell retired after 30 years of service with the company in the late 1980s. He enjoyed his retirement thoroughly, traveling to places of interest such as Thailand, Scotland, and Costa Rica, with his close friends Wes and Bill. In addition, he served his community by driving for FISH of Newtown, served as secretary of the Boys Club, and was co-founder of Uncle Charley’s Angels, the Danbury area chapter of Union Carbide Retiree Corps. He served as an assistant treasurer and member of the property and finance committee at Trinity Episcopal Church, where he was a member for more than 23 years.

Alan enjoyed living in Newtown with his family. He is survived by daughter Mary E. Mitchell of Newtown, daughter Laura I. Mathey and her husband Edward of Brookfield, and son Alan R. Mitchell, Jr, and his wife Sally of Danbury; and well as two nieces and one nephew in Texas.

Funeral services were held February 11 in Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street, Newtown.

Interment will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the Spring.
