WATERBURY â Black History Month will continue in Waterbury with a discussion on Monday, February 23, at 6 pm.
âBlack Womenâs Civic Organizationsâ will be led by Lillie Head, Heritage Shop advisory board member and a longtime member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women. The evening will be hosted by The Mattatuck Museum.
The program will focus on the importance of such civic organizations in the community and the commitment that these women have made. The event is free, and pre-registration is suggested.
The Obey Theatre Group, under the direction of Franchone Fraser, will present For Colored Girls who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf on Thursday, February 26, at 4 pm; Friday and Saturday, February 27-28, at 8 pm; and Sunday, February 29 at 2:30 pm, also at the museum.
The dramatic prose poem by the renowned playwright, poet and novelist Ntozake Shange was first produced in California in 1974 and went on to achieve great success on Broadway. The Obie Award-winning piece reveals what it is to be of color and female in the modern world. The piece contains adult content.
Pre-registration is suggested and admission is $10.
The Obey Theatre Group, featuring seven people from across the state, is new to Waterbury after having started in Las Vegas and New Jersey.
The Mattatuck Museum is at 144 West Main Street. The Heritage Shop, 378 Chase Avenue in Waterbury, is supporting the special events.
