Broadway ‘Valjean’ Helps NHS Cast Prepare For ‘Les Miserables’

Cast and crewmembers of Newtown High School’s upcoming production of Les Miserables enjoyed a surprise visit from theater veteran Ivan Rutherford recently.

Mr Rutherford, who played the leading role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables on Broadway, advised students on preparing for the vocally and dramatically demanding challenges of the show.

The cast listened intently as the actor recounted his stage experience performing in Les Miserables, which he characterized as a story “of the survival of humans.” He also performed two songs from the show, “The Confrontation” and “Who am I?”

Tyler von Oy, who stars as Valjean in the Newtown High School production, noted that Mr Rutherford was able to “show us that it wasn’t just the volume of our singing, but also the emotion, feeling, and intensity of our sound that is important.”

In addition to his role in Les Miserables, Mr Rutherford has appeared in the Broadway cast of Titanic and South Pacific. He lives with his wife and three children in Fairfield; his 10-year-old son Alex recently starred as Chip in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast.

Les Miserables is based on Victor Hugo’s novel chronicling the struggles of a poor man, Jean Valjean, to rise above the social injustice and political upheaval of 19th Century France.

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michael Schonberg wrote the musical adaptation of Les Miserables, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer.

Leading performers in the Newtown High School cast are: Tyler Von Oy as Valjean, Elyssa Samsel as Fantine, Melanie Beck as Eponine, Steven Petrovich as Javert, Amanda Eventoff as Cosette, Matt Grills as Marius, Kyle Lyddy as Thernardier, Leslie Greenfield as Madame Thernardier, and Erik Bagger as Enjolras.

More than 100 students are involved in the cast, costume, and technical crew for the production.

The show will be performed at Newtown High School from April 1 to April 4.

Tickets are $15 for reserved seating, general admission is $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. For tickets or more information call Nanci DiPerrio at 426-2412.
