Plymouth Off Road

Police report motorist William Jackson, 60, of 181 Sugar Street was driving a 1995 Plymouth Voyager minivan northward near 149 Currituck Road on the night of January 30, when he fell asleep, crossed over into the southbound lane, and then struck a mailbox and stone wall.

Jackson was not injured, police said. Police verbally warned him for making a restricted turn.

Ford Pickup Crash

Motorist Paul Scott, 32, of Bridgeport was driving a 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck near 172 Mt Pleasant Road about 7:30 am February 4, when he lost control of the vehicle on the ice-covered roadway and went off the right side of the road, striking a light post at the Newtown Professional center, police said.

Scott was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for traveling unreasonably fast.

Neighborhood Incident

Police report they charged a local man with breach of peace on the night of February 8 following a neighborhood incident.

Police said Philip J. Scappatura, III, 36, of 4 Beaver Dam Road had a dispute with a neighbor concerning the interaction of their two dogs. Sacappatura allegedly shouted profanities and threw a ceramic ornament in the direction of the neighbor’s residence, police said.

Police said they charged Scappatura with breach of peace and then released him on a $100 bail for a February 19 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Main Street Mishap

Motorist Thomas Hannibal, 42, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, backed out of the Main Street parking lot in front of the Newtown General Store at about 1 pm February 5 and collided with a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier, which was parked along the road’s northbound shoulder, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Hannibal a written warning for unsafe backing.

Walnut Tree Hill Road

Motorist Don D. Zemo, III, no age given, of Woodbury was driving a 2000 Ford pickup truck northward on Walnut Tree Hill Road on the night of February 4, when the vehicle went out of control on the icy road, drove up an embankment, and then rolled over onto its side, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Zemo to Danbury Hospital to be evaluated for a head injury and dizziness, police said. The accident is under investigation.

Town Plow Crash

Police report an accident on South Main Street at its southerly intersection with Pecks Lane at about 7:40 am February 5.

Police said town employee George Birch, 58, of 9 Baldwin Road was driving a large yellow town-owned dump truck, with a snowplow attached, westbound on Pecks Lane, after which he stopped at a stop sign at Pecks Lane’s intersection with South Main Street. Police said Birch told them that he saw a break in the traffic, so he went forward in preparation to turn left onto southbound South Main Street.

At that time, William Moseley, 55, of 191 Hanover Road was driving a 1997 Ford F-250 pickup truck northward on South Main Street, police said. The two vehicles collided, causing major damage to the right side of the pickup truck’s cab and minor damage to the left side of the snowplow, police said.

Moseley is a town employee, who was working at the time at the nearby municipal waste transfer station. Moseley was driving  his personal vehicle when the accident occurred.

There were no injuries, police said. Botsford firefighters went to the accident. Police said the accident is under investigation.

Dodge Rams Fence

Motorist Stephen Sullivan, 63, of 9 Tanglewood Lane, who was driving a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck eastward on Chipmunk Trail on the night of February 3, slid on the icy road and struck a fence and lightpost at 3 Chipmunk Trail, police report. Sullivan was not injured in the mishap, police said.

Riverside Slide

Douglas Kahn, 38, of 14 Rose Lane was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle on Riverside Road, near Johnson Drive, on the night of February 7, when he encountered ice on the road and slid into a utility pole, police said. Kahn was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for traveling at a speed too fast for conditions.

Jeep Hits Pole

Motorist Catherine Stickles, 16, of 67 Mt Pleasant Road was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee sport-utility vehicle northward on Walnut Tree Hill Road about 7 pm February 7, when the Jeep went out of control, skidded onto the northbound road shoulder, struck a utility pole, crossed the road, and then struck a street sign, police said. Stickles was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Mercedes Crash

Motorist James Gantsoudes, 17, of Redding was driving a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300-TE station wagon northward on Poverty Hollow Road about 4:15 pm February 6, when the auto went out of control, struck a tree along the southbound road shoulder, and then became lodged on a stone wall, police report. Gantsoudes was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

SUV Crash

Motorist Suzanne Fitch, 43, of Roxbury, who was driving a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle westward on Obtuse Road about 6:30 pm February 7, hit an icy patch of roadway and slid off the eastbound road shoulder, striking a wooden fence at 8 Obtuse Road, police said.

Fitch was not injured. Police issued Fitch a written warning.

Mt Pleasant Mishap

While driving a 1997 Nissan Altima eastward on Mt Pleasant Road on the night of February 2, motorist Elizabeth Huebner, 46, of Milford encountered a deer in the road, police report. The auto and deer collided. The deer died. Huebner was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

 

Audi Off Road

Motorist Elizabeth Bedell, 42, of 2 Abbotts Hill was driving a 2002 Audi A-4 northward on Poverty Hollow Road early on the morning of February 5, when the auto veered onto the southbound road shoulder, knocked down a utility pole and then hit a large tree head-on, police report. The cause of the accident is unclear, police said.

Bedell was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, according to police. The accident is under investigation.

SUV Vs Pole

While traveling southward on High Rock Road, near New Lebbon Road, about 4 pm February 3, motorist Veronica Hartz, 27, of 107 High Rock Road, who was driving a 2003 Toyota Sequoia sport-utility vehicle, lost control of the vehicle on the slippery road and struck a utility pole, police report.

Hartz was not injured. Police verbally warned Hartz for traveling too fast for conditions.

Minivan Accident

Motorist Margaret Brower, 55, of 6 Winding Brook Road was driving a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country minivan southward on John Beach Road about 6:30 pm February 3, when the vehicle went out of control on the icy road and struck a utility pole and several small trees along the southbound road shoulder, police said. Brower was not injured. Police verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Mustang Into Pole

Jaime Garcia, 21, of 28 Sugar Street was driving a 1988 Ford Mustang northward on South Main Street about 2 am February 4, when the auto went out of control and veered onto the nortbound road shoulder, police said. The Ford struck guard railing, three guard posts, and a road sign and then spun around and struck a utility pole, police report.

Garcia was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, police said. The crash under investigation.

Jeep Vs Nissan

While driving a 1999 Nissan Maxima westward on Church Hill Road, west of the Housatonic Railroad overpass on February 4, motorist Maureen Mucherino, 39, of Oxford, slowed for traffic, police said. Westbound motorist Frank Nicolia, 19, of Monroe, who was driving a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, struck the Nissan from behind, according to police. There were no injuries. Police issued Nicolia a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and for failure to wear a seatbelt. Police issued Mucherino a written warning for failure to wear a seatbelt. 

 

Honda Crash

Motorist Kim Ferro, 27, of Monroe, who was driving a 1997 Honda Accord eastward on Route 34, near the Monroe town line, lost control of the auto and slid off the road, striking guard railing along the eastbound road shoulder at about 8:15 am February 5, police report.

Ferro was not injured. Police issued Ferro a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Snowplow Accident

Motorist Calvin Youngberg, 74, of 11 Whitewood Road, who was driving a 2000 Buick LeSabre, was traveling eastward on Mt Pleasant Road about 10 pm February 5, when he slowed and signaled to turn left onto Blackman Road, police report. Eastbound motorist Steven Gies, 46, of 14 Knollwood Drive, who was driving a 2001 Ford F-350 pickup truck, with a snowplow attached, then struck the Buick from behind with the snowplow, police said.

There were no injuries in the accident, according to police. Police gave Gies a written warning for following too closely.

Hawleyville Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred on southbound Hawleyville Road, near the westbound Interstate 84 Exit 9 on-ramp about 12:45 pm February 7, police report.

Southbound motorist Crismar Carneiro, 40, of Redding Ridge, who was driving a 1999 Toyota RAV-4 sport-utility vehicle, was stopped and waiting to turn left onto the on-ramp when it was struck from behind by southbound motorist Kevin Oppenheim, 54, of Hamden, who was driving a 2002 Hyundai Sonata, police said.

Police said that two of the four passengers in the Toyota were transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked for injuries. They are Yago Carneiro, 11, of Redding Ridge, and Rodrigo Castro, 13, of Bethel.

Police issued Oppenheim an infraction ticket for traveling too fast for conditions, and also verbally warned him for failure to carry an automotive insurance card.

Warrant Served

Police report that on February 6 they served a warrant against John Bogos, 47, of Monroe, charging him with second degree failure to appear in court and with driving under the influence. The motor vehicle charge stems from an incident last July 10, police said. Police released Bogos on $2,500 bail for a February 18 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Fire Truck Collision

Police said firefighter Thomas Cassin, 42, of 6 Taunton Lake Road was driving the town-owned Newtown Hook and Ladder aerial ladder fire truck to a house fire in the Shady Rest section about 5:35 pm February 6, when an accident occurred between the fire truck and an automobile.

 Police said that as Cassin was driving the 2001 Pierce fire truck northward on Shady Rest Boulevard, a northbound 2001 Plymouth Neon driven by Shannon Hicks, 34, of 18 Sugar Street pulled over to the right to allow the fire truck to pass by.

The Plymouth began to move before the fire truck completely passed by and the two vehicles collided, according to police. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Hicks a written warning concerning yielding to emergency vehicles.

DUI Charge

While on patrol about 1:45 am February 10, police said they spotted a 1997 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle traveling on Glen Road toward Southbury with an expired vehicle registration.

Police said the stopped the vehicle and investigated. Police said they gave the driver, Julie France- Pierpaoli, 37, of Southbury sobriety tests, after which they charged her with driving under the influence and driving an unregistered vehicle.

After processing the arrest, police released France-Pierpaoli on a $50 bond for a February 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Paraphernalia

Police report that Newtown High School students Bradley Campbell, 16, of 4 Stonewall Ridge Road, and Christopher Socci, 17, of 18 Crossbrook Road were found to be returning to the high school midday on February 9, after having left the premises without permission.

Police said they charged both youths with possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were released from police custody on promises to appear February 24 in Danbury Superior Court.

Lexus Into Tree

Motorist Chandy Phothisarath, no age given, of Bridgeport was driving a Lexus LS-400 sedan westward on Mt Pleasant Road about 7:30 am February 4, when the vehicle spun out on the icy road and struck curbing and a tree along the eastbound road shoulder, police said. Phothisarath was not injured in the mishap, police said.

Rear-End Collision

Motorist Terry Welsh, 44, of Wolcott, who was driving a 1999 Subaru Legacy, stopped at a red traffic signal on Mile Hill Road at its intersection with South Main Street at about 7:15 am February 5, police said.

Welsh was attempting to turn right onto northbound South Main Street and rolled forward, but then stopped for approaching traffic, police said.

Motorist Megan Saul, 23, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 1995 Toyota 4-Runner sport-utility vehicle, then drove into the rear end of the Subaru, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Saul a written warning for following too closely.

Glover/Queen

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the hazardous intersection of Queen Street and Glover Avenue about 4 pm February 9.

Police said motorist Henrietta Penrod, 69, of 3 St George Place, who was driving a 2002 Saturn VUE, was traveling eastward on Glover Avenue and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Queen Street.

At that time, Lois Barber 48, of 33 Zoar Road was driving a 2001 Honda station wagon southward on Queen Street, police said.

The Saturn then turned left onto Queen Street and collided with the Honda, police said.

There were no injuries in the accident, police said. Police issued Penrod an infraction ticket on a stop sign violation.

Church Hill Accident

Motorist Robert Brown, 66, of Stratford, who was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina westward on Church Hill Road and was approaching that road’s intersection with The Boulevard at about 12:30 pm February 9, attempted to pass on the right a stopped westbound noncontact vehicle, which was waiting to make a left turn into the Lexington Gardens driveway, police report.

In making that maneuver, the Chevrolet struck a 2000 Audi A-4 that was parked on Church Hill Road’s westbound road shoulder and driven by Kathleen Davis, 50, of 38 Osborne Hill Road, police said.

There were no injuries, police said. Police issued Brown an infraction ticket on a charge of passing on the right.

 

Berkshire Crash

Police report a two-car accident about 6:30 am February 11 on Berkshire Road, near the Monroe town line.

Motorist Christopher Evans, 19, of 25 Rock Ridge Road, who was driving a 2000 Honda Civic coupe, was traveling eastward on Berkshire Road and then turned left to enter a driveway at 303 Berkshire Road, when he was struck from behind by motorist Guillermo Parra, 45, of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., who was driving a 1992 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

There were no injuries. Police issued Parra an infraction ticket for following too closely.
