The Sound Of Pennies

Is Music To Their Ears

By Larissa Lytwyn

Each morning at Trinity Day School, students eagerly dump pennies from bulging plastic baggies into a brightly decorated tin.

“They love the sound the pennies make when they fall into the can,” laughed Trinity Day School Director Nancy Nathanson.

Trinity is conducting a monthlong Penny Drive to help buy instruments for the music classes in Lebanon Day Care’s Head Start program in Lebanon, N.H.

“My sister-in-law works at Lebanon Day Care,” explained Ms Nathanson.

Trinity has conducted past fundraisers for the school, including a book drive.

This year, Ms Nathanson, and Trinity’s Board of Directors wanted “to do something different.”

Trinity’s music teacher Barbara Chamberlain has spent time teaching students how the rhythm and percussion instruments they have been learning are currently unattainable at Lebanon.

“I think they truly understand, they get it,” said Ms Nathanson. “It’s wonderful how they are learning to become aware of, and help, others.”

“The children have been very excited about bringing in their pennies,” said Ms Chamberlain. “It really does a lot for them!”

The money collected will be sent sometime next month, Ms Nathanson said.
