What Happened To The Woodlands?

DERBY — The Naugatuck Valley Audubon Society, Inc, in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Kellogg Environmental Center, will host a program, “Our Local Woodlands 1850–2000: What Happened?” The presentation will take place on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:30 pm.

Skip Hobson, a retired forester, will discuss the effects of agriculture, stone walls, charcoaling, sheep, fire, wind, and timber harvesting on Connecticut’s forests.

Mr Hobson worked for Connwood, Inc, as a private consultant for 32 years. He also worked for Birmingham Utilities as a forest and watershed manager for 12 years until his retirement.

In his talk he will reconstruct what has happened to the land from 1850 to the present. He will also explore what the land could reasonably be expected to yield in the future.

The program will take place at Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue; signs are posted from Route 34.

For further information, directions or to register, call the environmental center at 734-2513 or contact Peter Hornak at 203-729-6777.
