On one of the coldest and windiest days of the year so far, the gym at Newtown High School was anything but chilly. On February 7, 2026, laughter, cheers, and the bounce of basketballs filled the air as Families United in Newtown (FUN) hosted its Pajama Basketball Scrimmage event that proved community spirit is the best way to turn up the heat.

More than 60 FUN members, family members, mentors, and volunteers joined together in cozy, colorful pajamas to support Newtown High School senior Stephen Singlak, who planned and executed the event as part of his Capstone senior experience. The scrimmage and bake sale fundraiser were a true success, highlighting FUN’s mission of inclusion, connection, and mentorship.

The energy inside the gym was electric from the very start, thanks in part to DJ Chris Samson, who kept the good vibes flowing all afternoon. From the opening notes and the national anthem before the scrimmage, the upbeat tracks got everyone moving for an afternoon of fun, teamwork, basketball, face painting, and Valentine card making.

Participants began with a warm-up that doubled as a learning experience, rotating through four instructional stations: Free Throws, Layups, Knock Out, and PIG.

Mentors worked closely with athletes at each station, offering encouragement, instruction, and plenty of high-fives as skills and confidence grew.

Then it was game time. The red team and blue team took the court for a scrimmage that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The game stayed tight from start to finish, and after much suspense, the final buzzer sounded with the teams locked in an exciting 33-33 tie, proving that the real victory was shared by all.

Following the thrilling finish, hungry athletes refueled with pizza, while families gathered around the bake sale tables filled with homemade treats. The bake sale raised $160 for FUN, adding another win to an already successful day. Nearly 20 dedicated mentors supported their “charges,” exemplifying the heart of FUN and the power of showing up for one another.

Families United in Newtown continues to create inclusive, meaningful opportunities that build friendships and confidence, and there’s plenty more on the horizon.
