Private Property Collision

A 2016 Chevrolet Express Cutaway being operated by Joseph A. Ortelle, 58, of Cheshire, began pulling into a parking space in front of Newtown General Store, 43 Main Street, around 6:02 am, Friday, January 29.

The front left bumper of that vehicle made contact with the rear left wheel well of a 2008 Toyota Tacoma DoubleCab being operated by Tony A. Don, 53, of Newtown.

No injuries were reported.

The Toyota sustained minor damage to the left rear wheel well, but did not need to be towed.

No enforcement was taken as the accident occurred on private property.

Following Too Close

A 2011 BMW X5 Xdrive35i being operated by Jonathan Palacio, 24, of Newtown, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road behind a 2018 Subaru Outback Touring, around 4:34 pm, Friday, January 29.

Kellyann Cerrato, 48, of Sandy Hook, was operating the Subaru. She told police she was slowing for traffic near The Boulevard because it was difficult to see ahead of her due to a strong sun glare.

Palacio told police he had a difficult time seeing due to strong sun glare. He further stated that by the time he noticed the Subaru had slowed down, it was too late to avoid a collision.

The front of the BMW struck the rear of the Subaru.

The responding police officer did not observe a strong sun glare upon their arrival. They did note damage to both vehicles. The Subaru had to be towed.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. Neither driver was injured.

Palacio was given a verbal warning for violation failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Dirt Bike Riding Equipment Found

A Newtown resident on January 31 turned in to Newtown Police a large canvas bag of dirt bike riding equipment that had been found on or about January 16 or 17 in the roadway of Bennetts Bridge Road at Jeremiah Road.

The owner, or anyone who may know anything about the equipment, is invited to contact Newtown Police Department, 203-426-5841, to claim the property.

Car Overturned

Ana Totten, 47, of Brookfield, was operating a 2019 Hyundai Tucson S westbound on Currituck Road near its intersection with Obtuse and Hawleyville roads on February 1, around 1:05 pm, while it was snowing heavily.

Totten lost control of the vehicle on the snow-covered road.

The Hyundai slid into the right shoulder, overturned, and came to rest in a ditch.

The Hyundai’s air bags deployed. Totten was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Rollover In Heavy Snow

A 1998 Toyota 4-Runner being operated by Sosa G. Moran, 66, of Bridgeport, was traveling northbound on South Main Street around 5:11 am, Monday, February 1, when it went off the road and western shoulder at the intersection with Greenbriar Lane.

The 4-Runner struck the curbing at the northwest corner of the intersection and then rolled over, coming to a rest on the passenger side facing west.

Moran was able to exit the vehicle through the sunroof and stated he was not injured.

Moran told responding the responding police officer that he had been traveling approximately 35 mph in heavy snow. Moran lost control of the truck when it began to fishtail before it went off the roadway, according to the report.

The vehicle was towed.

Too Fast For Conditions

A 2006 Honda Accord V being operated by Kailing Ng, 23, of Southbury, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road in the area of Currituck Road around 8:48 am, Tuesday, February 2.

While negotiating a curve in the roadway near the intersection with Currituck Road, the Honda slid on the wet/icy roadway. The vehicle went off the northbound shoulder, coming to rest approximately 20 feet from the roadway.

No injuries were reported to Ng, who was wearing a seat belt.

Ng was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Too Fast For Conditions

Adeval O. Alves, 45, of Danbury, was operating a 2003 Ford F-150 southbound on Mt Pleasant Road, in the area of Johnnie Cake Lane, around 2:42 pm, Tuesday, February 2.

According to Newtown police, Alves lost control of the pickup truck due to wet/slippery road conditions. The truck crossed over the northbound land, struck a guardrail on the northbound shoulder and then spun, striking the mailbox at 8 Mt Pleasant Road.

Alves was wearing a seat belt, and the truck’s air bags did not deploy. No injuries were reported.

Alves was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Failure To Drive In Proper Lane

Matthew J. Pietrorazio, 17, of Newtown, was operating a 2011 Subaru Outback 2.5I Limited north on Brushy Hill Road, around 2:52 pm, Tuesday, February 2.

Near the intersection with Bonnie Brae Drive, the Subaru skidded on the slushy, wet road surface and the veered off the eastern side of the roadway. The station wagon then struck a tree located east of the roadway.

The vehicle rolled over after making contact with the tree, coming to rest on its roof across both lanes of travel.

Pietrorazio, who was wearing a seat belt, was not injured. The vehicle’s side air bag deployed, and the Outback was towed from the scene.

Pietrorazio was issued an infraction failure to drive in proper lane.

Snow-Slush Conditions

A 2007 Nissan Sentra being operated by Jaiden M. Klutch, 19, of Monroe, was traveling northbound on Pine Tree Hill Road around 10:42 am, Tuesday, February 2. Roads were slush and snow covered at the time.

Klutch lost control of the Nissan as it neared 47 Pine Tree Hill Road. The sedan spun around and crossed into the southbound travel lane, coming to rest under tree branches and a snowbank off the road and western shoulder.

Klutch, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was not injured. Air bags did not deploy, and the vehicle did not need to be towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Compass Vs Explorer

A 2017 Ford Explorer, operated by Joseph Premus, 18, of Sandy Hook, was traveling southbound on Botsford Hill Road around 7:02 pm, February 2.

Premus stopped the Explorer at the intersection with High Bridge Road to make a left turn.

Meanwhile, Nicolette Muscarella, 21, of Commack, N.Y., operating a 2019 Jeep Compass, was also traveling southbound on Bostford Hill Road. Muscarella attempted to stop behind the Explorer, but the Compass began to slide on the snow-covered roadway. The front end of the Compass then struck the rear end of the Explorer.

No injuries were reported on scene. Both drivers and a passenger in the Explorer were wearing shoulder and lap belts. A second passenger in the Explorer was wearing only a lap belt at the time of the collision. Neither vehicle needed to be towed.

Muscarella was given a verbal warning for failure to maintain a reasonable distance apart-motor vehicle accident.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown police report Sara A. Sasso, 31, of Newtown, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road, operating a 2017 Infiniti Q50 Premium, around 12:49 am, Wednesday, February 3.

As Sasso was negotiating a left hand curve near High Rock Road, she lost control of the Infiniti due to slippery road conditions. The car crossed over the center yellow line and exited the westbound shoulder of the roadway, striking an embankment with its front bumper.

The vehicle spun around and struck a large boulder with its left bumper before reentering the roadway and coming to a stop.

The vehicle’s air bags deployed. Sasso, who was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, was not injured.

The Infiniti was towed due to disabling damage.

Sasso was given a verbal warning for operating a motor vehicle too fast for conditions.

Following Too Close

A 2015 Nissan Pathfinder being operated by Kurt D. Vollinger, 37, of Newtown, was stopped on Swamp Road, behind a 2016 Nissan Sentra, around 3:34 pm, Thursday, February 4.

Andrine Aldophe, operating the Sentra, was waiting to turn left onto South Main Street.

The Pathfinder’s front bumper made contact with the rear of the Sentra, causing minor damage to both vehicles.

Aldophe and a passenger in the Sentra were both transported to a hospital for possible injuries. Both had been wearing seat belts. The Sentra’s air bags did not deploy.

Vollinger was given a verbal warning for following too close-causing a motor vehicle accident.

Unreasonable Distance

A 2016 Mercedes-Benz MI350 operated by Kim M. Didomizio, 56, of Newtown, that had been traveling northbound on Queen Street stopped for traffic around 1:01 pm, Saturday, February 7.

Lopez A. Alvarez, 32, of Danbury, operating a 2006 Honda CR-V LX, was also traveling north on Queen Street, behind the Mercedes-Benz. Alvarez failed to stop the Honda, and the front of his car made contact with the rear of the Mercedes.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle’s air bags deployed.

Alvarez was given a verbal warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.
