Community Center To Be Built With 'Crumbs' By Paul D. Fadus

To the Editor:

The final recommendation of the Newtown Community Center Commission is as follows:

"Development of an aquatic center featuring a 50 meter competition-ready swimming pool, and a separate zero-entry recreation pool;

"A community center facility that is as large as can be completed with the balance of available funds;"

The phrase that states that the Community Center is to be built with "the balance of available funds" is most disconcerting. If I'm to interpret it correctly, the GE gift is to be applied to the aquatic center and the remaining "crumbs" are to be applied the Community Center with the deficit to be made up by the taxpayers, via CIP.

In other words, the GE Gift to the people of Newtown to help us heal is being spent on pools, and the money needed to build an actual community center must be borrowed and paid back over the next 20 years by the taxpayers.

How sad that our gift from GE has been hijacked by special interests while the rest of us must ulti-mately buy our own community center.
