World Day Of Prayer, March 2
Newtown-Bethel Church Women United will join 170 countries around the world when the local women gather Friday, March 2, at the Walnut Hill Community Church in Bethel to observe the World Day of Prayer. The public is invited to the celebration that is slated for 1:30 pm with refreshments being served before the service at 1 pm.
âInformed Prayer and Prayerful Actionâ is the theme for this yearâs celebration written by Christian women of Samoa, where the national motto is âSamoa is founded on God.â It is based on Esther 4:1-16. Esther was summoned during a time of crisis to pray and act according to her faith. She first sought to be informed, and later engaged in fasting and prayer as she discerned Godâs will for herself and her people.
The women of Samoa welcome celebrants with the greeting Talofa (tah-loh-fah), which means welcome and invites all to share in the traditional Kava Ceremony as a way of coming to know their unique history and profound faith. It is through this experience that worshippers are invited to become informed, from their own particular contexts and backgrounds, in prayer and finally to act to bring about the Kingdom of God.
Roxane Duane Telesha of the Walnut Hill Church will be conducting the Kava Ceremony during the celebration. She is an ordained pastor in the Elim (means oasis) Fellowship and has her own ministry, âA Joy Outreach,â that pastors dying people and friends. She herself has survived the loss of two children.
Other participants in the service from Newtown will be Pat Stroud of St Rose Church, Doris Schoonmaker of St Johnâs Episcopal Church, Barbara Gates of United Methodist Church, Betty Williams, Darlene Jackson, Peg Forbell, and the Rev Janice Touloukian, all from Newtown Congregational Church, and a group of young people from the Walnut Tree Church.
Barbara Gorham, Sue Lewis, and Doris Baggetta, all of Walnut Tree Church, Shirley Roman of Christ the King Lutheran, and local CWU President Jeane Roberts were planning committee for this celebration. Sue Klein of the United Methodist Church will be working with Mrs Gorham to coordinate the musical portion. Dolores Lussier of St Rose will be the vocal soloist.
CWU invites friends and families of faith to join in the Prayer 2001 celebration and worship. The celebration is free, but there will be a free-will offering that will help support the ecumenical ministries toward peace and justice. Thirteen percent of the offerings are designated toward womenâs projects both internationally and in the US. An additional four percent will go to support the ongoing work of The World Day of Prayer International Committee that works with women in different countries in preparation of service materials and resources.
World Day of Prayer was begun in 1887 by Presbyterian laywomen Mary Ellen James. World Day of Prayer brings together women from many backgrounds, cultures, and Christian traditions. Since 1941, World Day of Prayer has been sponsored in the United States by Church Women United, a grassroots ecumenical movement of Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian women.
Child care will be available, but those bringing children should call the key women from the participating churches. They are Mrs Gorham (426-2110) at Walnut Tree; Mrs Stroud (426-5270) at St Rose; Norma Gray (426-2712) at Trinity Episcopal; Mrs Schoonmaker (270-0311) at St Johnâs Episcopal; Mrs Roman (426-0638) at Christ the King Lutheran; Mrs Gates (426-3446) at Newtown United Methodist; Mrs Williams (270-0031) at Newtown Congregational; Althea Benedict (748-2910) at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Bethel.
