Childrenâs Programs
Author Visit: Award winning childrenâs author Jane Yolen will visit the library on Sunday, March 4, at 2 pm. Ms Yolen is the author of hundreds of books, including the Caldecott winner Owl Moon.
Following the program she will be signing copies of some of her most popular titles. Mark your calendars and donât miss this unique opportunity to meet one of the most talented and prolific childrenâs authors in America. For more information about this or any other childrenâs program call 426-3851.
Adult Programs
Tax Help: Ken Wilkinson is returning to the library on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 4 pm during tax season to help with tax-related questions. No appointment is necessary. Mr Wilkinson can be found in the Large Print Room, which is located next to the circulation desk on the main floor of the library.
Mystery Author to Visit the Library: Marcia Talley, a relatively new mystery writer, will be joining us for the discussion of her first book, Sing it to her Bones, on March 6 at 7:30 pm. Please join us for this special evening with a published author. All are welcome even if you havenât been attending the other programs in the series. Coyote Waits by Tony Hillerman will be the final book discussed on March 27.
Several copies of these titles will be available at the library. The books will be located in a special book discussion area, so please be sure to ask at the circulation desk if you have any trouble finding them. All discussions will take place in the Special Collections Room on the third floor beginning at 7:30 pm.
A Creative Sampler: Ginger Humestonâs five-part workshop on âCreativityâ has been wildly successful and she has offered to coordinate an evening class for those who were unable to attend the January-February workshops. Please call the library at 426-4533 if you are interested in learning more about this program. The workshop will focus on ways to enrich ourselves through a variety of mediums.
Armchair Travel Series Continues with Film on Peru: The series will continue on March 1, at 7:30 pm with Wendy Leon Gambetta introducing a film about Peru. On March 8, Ian McMahon will share his knowledge of Ireland. Both programs take place in the meeting room of the library. Call 426-4533 to reserve a place. Refreshments will be served. This promises to be a fun and cultural experience. All are invited to attend.
New Daytime Book Discussion: For all of you unable to make the evening book discussions please consider joining us at the library for a new daytime book discussion group. The group originally scheduled to meet on Monday, February 26 needs to be rescheduled due to a conflict. Please watch this column for the new start date. The group will be discussing Anita Shreveâs novel The Weight of Water. In March the book will be Anita Diamantâs popular best seller, The Red Tent. Call the library if you are interested in attending.
The Bluebirds Are Coming: Author and naturalist Fred Comstock will be returning to the library on Sunday, March 11, at 2 pm to present a talk and slide show on bluebirds, including how to attract them and keep them coming back to your yard year after year. Bluebird house kits (a great Spring project for your whole family!) and Mr Comstockâs book, Bluebirds: The How-To Book, will be available for purchase.
Ecological Landscaping: Garry Ober, a popular speaker on gardening and landscape issues, will be giving a presentation on the important topic of invasive plants here in Connecticut on Wednesday, March 7, at 10 am in the meeting room. This program will help promote knowledge and understanding of invasive plants.
The spread of non-native invasive plants is regarded by some to be the second most important threat to native species. The program is free and the public is invited to attend. Please call the library to reserve a place. Refreshments will be served.
The Family in Modern Drama: What makes a family American? How do modern families differ from traditional families? What has caused the erosion of traditional family values? These are some of the questions explored in this new series, led by Gordon Williams and Liz Arneth.
Along with the reading of The Glass Menagerie, Fences, Long Dayâs Journey into Night, and The Little Foxes, the group will view some films of these plays and take a road trip to Hartford to see Elizabeth Ashley in The Glass Menagerie.
