Fraser-Woods School

Opens New Wing

By Tanjua Damon

Fraser-Woods Montessori opened a new wing at the school that provides more instructional space for the almost 200 students attending the school on Route 25 in Newtown.

The newly opened wing added science and math and humanities classrooms for middle school students, a media center, an after-school center, and the commons. The Montessori school educates students from ages 18 months through 14 years old. The school has existed in Newtown since 1968, when it opened as Newtown Montessori School.

The name of the school was changed last spring to Fraser-Woods School when the school  moved into the nine-acre site with 42,000 square feet of educational space on Route 25 in Newtown, Linda Hallinan, director of marketing and development, said. The school was formerly located on Dodgingtown Road.

A capital campaign, “The Small School Advantage. It Keeps on Growing,” has been underway at the school to obtain funds to develop the site that once was a warehouse owned by Gordon Fraser to produce greeting cards, gift wrap, and other paper products. It was originally built in 1976.

Plans continue to develop the school for future expansion, according to Ms Hallinan.

When the school is fully expand, it will be able to educate 260 students. The school currently holds 187 students. Fraser-Woods currently serves students from three counties: Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven.

“We have as many new families this year as we had families last year,” Ms Hallinan said.

Middle and elementary school students attend school from 8:15 am to 3 pm, while lower school (3 to 6-year-olds) as well as toddlers can attend a full day from 8:30 am to 3 pm or a half-day from 8:30 to 11:30 am.

The Fraser-Woods School is state-approved; has an affiliation with the American Montessori Society (AMS); and is accredited by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).
