GBS Concert

BRIDGEPORT — Exciting new works by today’s youth, along with established masterpieces, will be featured at Greater Bridgeport Symphony’s fourth subscription concert on Saturday, March 10.

The 8 pm performance — sponsored by Connecticut Commission on the Arts and The Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation — will take place at the 936-seat Mertens Theater at the University of Bridgeport’s Bernhard Center, at the corner of University and Iranistan Avenues. The center is easily reached from all major routes, and free, attended parking will be provided for symphony patrons at University parking lots next to the center.

(The Mertens will be the temporary venue for GBS concerts while the Klein Memorial Auditorium, its regular home, undergoes extensive renovations).

Last year, composer Deborah Fischer Teason worked on a weekly basis with four seventh grade classes from The Roosevelt School, an inner-city school located on the south side of Bridgeport. The curriculum was meant to serve as an introduction for elementary and middle school students into the world of the orchestra through symphony composition and performance.

J.D. Gersen demonstrated an interest in music at a very early age. He was reading orchestral score before the age of three and began studying music formally at age five J. D. has been playing violin since he was seven year old and currently students with Denise Chividian of Westport, a core member of the GBSO.

The Masuk High School junior has also played drums, keyboard, and French horn in the Marching Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band. He is also a member of Masuk’s renowned chorus and chamber choir.

Greater Bridgeport Symphony is made up musicians from throughout Fairfield County, including Wendy Hedin and Val Wolfe, both of Newtown.

Single tickets costs range from $10 to $47. Students under 18 will be admitted at half-price in certain price categories, and special discount rates are available for groups of ten or more. For reservations and information, call the Greater Bridgeport Symphony office at 203/576-0263 (Visa/MasterCard accepted), or visit the symphony’s web site at www.bridgeportsymphony.org. The Mertens Theater box office will open one hour prior to the performance.
