Dear Dr Pitkoff:
Dear Dr Pitkoff:
I would like to let you know how very pleased I am with the education my children are receiving here in Newtown. We moved here from North Carolina almost two years ago and our educational experience thus far has been wonderful. I have a third grader at Sandy Hook and a fifth grader at Reed and both are doing great.
While I am pleased with what I have personally seen in the elementary and intermediate school, I am deeply disturbed by things I have heard regarding the high school. Ever since I moved here, several parents and students have talked to me about the widespread drug use and sexual acts taking place at Newtown High. Recently, my ninth grade babysitter told me about:
* The frequent and blatant sale of drugs in the halls
* Sexual acts taking place in the bathrooms
* Profanity used by teachers in the classroom and in homework assignments
* Girls sitting in boys laps âgrindingâ in the lobby
* Smoking on the campus when this is a smoke-free facility.
When I asked her what the teachers did about these acts, she said ânothingâ â they seem âscared or donât care.â She is an extremely bright student and loves learning. Unfortunately, she is very stressed about attending school and said many of her friends are as well. That is very sad. Many parents I have spoken to have heard of the same incidents outlined above. Our high school seems to have the reputation of having no rules.
I am extremely concerned about this situation. This is obviously not the type of educational environment I want for my children. I would like to meet with you to discuss these concerns. I am willing to help in any way I can to improve the situation. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Temple Whitaker
