Influential Men Of The 20th Century

HARTFORD — A new exhibition exploring some of the 20th Century’s greatest male thinkers will open at The Mark Twain House & Museum on March 5. The show will continue through June 6.

The exhibition is based on Men of Mark, Alvin Langdon Coburn’s 1913 book of 33 influential men, and how his unconventional approach to 20th Century photography helped define modernism.

The theme for the exhibition is to explore the zeitgeist of Coburn’s subjects, the men who made their mark on our world.

Objects will highlight how each of the visionary figures – from Rodin, Matisse and Yeats to Shaw, Twain and Roosevelt – bridged the 19th and 20th Centuries and advanced the revolution of the literary and visual arts, philosophy, criticism and politics.

The Mark Twain House & Museum Center is a portal to American history and contemporary life. The Mark Twain House is the author’s Hartford home from 1874 to 1891, when he wrote some of his greatest works. The Museum Center opened in November 2003 and provides a penetrating look at Twain, his peers, period influences and enduring legacy.

The Mark Twain House & Museum, at 351 Farmington Avenue, is open daily 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, Thursdays until 8 pm. Closed Tuesdays January through April.
