Investigation Into Dual Pedestrian Accident Continuing

Police this week said they are continuing their investigation into a February 11 accident in which a motorist driving on a marked road work zone on Boggs Hill Road struck and knocked down two town road crew members, who were directing traffic for a tree-trimming project.
Police Lieutenant George Sinko said February 19 that the police investigation is continuing. Patrol officer Jason Flynn is the investigator.
The two men who were injured in the accident are off work and are recuperating from their injuries at their homes, said Public Works Director Fred Hurley. Both men were treated for their injuries at Danbury Hospital and then released.Â
The men were struck while directing traffic at a tree-trimming job at the driveway entrance to Head Oâ Meadow School at about 1 pm, February 11. Motorist Helen Gulalo, 80, of 41 Hattertown Road, who was driving a 1995 Subaru Legacy southward, struck the two men. A third member of the five-man work crew reportedly narrowly escaped injury by darting out of the way of the auto.
Struck by the Subaru were road crew members George Birch, 58, of 9 Baldwin Road, and Raymond Peck, 57, of 23 Philo Curtis Road.
Mr Birch received head cuts in the accident, and Mr Peck received a broken leg.
Labor on roadways is dangerous work, Mr Hurley has said, noting that the men could have been more seriously injured or even killed in the accident.
Police spent about one hour at the accident scene collecting evidence. Dodgingtown and Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters responded to the accident, as did the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
