Mayumi Terada Photographs Open At Robert Miller Gallery In NYC

NEW YORK CITY — Robert Miller Gallery announces the first New York solo exhibition of the photographic works of Mayumi Terada, on view through April 7.

The photographs in this exhibition are black and white prints, ranging in size from 40½ by 55 inches to 24 by 20 inches and have been completed since the artist’s arrival in New York in 2001.

Terada’s sparsely appointed subjects are light-infused interior spaces. They are stripped down settings with windows or doors and simple domestic furnishings that evoke a sense of absence. Yet these images are not what they seem. Subtle inconsistencies of scale disrupt the reading of the scene.

In reality the artist has constructed her own subjects. They are miniature tabletop tableaux made by her own hand. These all-white models are illuminated by natural light and then photographed. The results are images rendered in an exquisitely refined tonality.
