Hawk Swimmers Turn In Strong Performances

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team was dominant in an 89-70 win at Bunnell-Stratford on February 17. The Nighthawks sealed the team win after the 200 yard freestyle relay race and exhibitioned the final three events.

“The team turned in some strong performances tonight, including numerous new State and SWC qualifying times. With one regular season meet left, they are looking really good for the postseason,” said Assistant Coach Lisa Irving, whose Nighthawks will host Masuk of Monroe Friday, February 20 at 6 pm before competing in the South-West Conference Championships — diving Wednesday, February 25 at Pomperaug of Southbury at 5:30, with the swim events the next evening at Masuk, starting at 5.

In the 200 medley relay race, Elias Kolb, Sam Irving, Kyle Albrecht, and Alex Gadbut won in a time of 1:49.87. Finn Clancy took first in the 200 free in 1:55.71; Warren Ache was second in 2:01.64. Brady Wennerholm won the 200 individual medley in 2:28.77. Gadbut and Albrecht gave NHS a one-two outcome in the 50 free with times of 23.57 and 24.00.

There was no diving in this meet. Albrecht won the 100 butterfly in 58.76; Jeremiah Stone came in second in 1:09.48. Gadbut and Warren Ache took the top two spots in the 100 free in 51.87 and 52.21. In the 500 free, Irving was first, making his final touch in 5:35.71, and Wennerholm second in 6:11.38.

The 200 free relay team of Warren Ache, Finn Clancy, Albrecht, and Gadbut was first in 1:34.79; the relay group comprising Trenton Story, Stone, Cameron Ache, and Connor Kelly, was second in 1:50.92. In the 100 backstroke, Finn Clancy won in 1:03.65 and Beau Clancy came in second in 1:03.95. In the 100 breaststroke race, Irving was first in 1:09.41 and Kolb second in 1:12.72.

NHS had the fastest finishers in the 400 free relay with Warren Ache, Story, Kelly, and Kolb clocking in at 3:55.82 and Wennerholm, Cameron Ache, Ryan Lombard, and Beau Clancy wrapping up their race in 4:23.33.
