Phone Books Getting Thicker, Fewer

NEW HAVEN (AP) — Southern New England Telephone’s phone books are getting thicker and there will be fewer of them.

SNET, the state’s primary local telephone company, announced plans Monday to introduce seven new regional phone directories, replacing the 26 directories that the company has published in the past.

``People today lead very busy lives,’’ Ray LeBlanc, vice president for SNET Yellow Pages said Monday. ``This new directory is in direct response to those who told us they want one resource for all the phone numbers and shopping information they use on a regular basis.’’

The first of the new directories, covering Southeastern Connecticut, will be distributed to customers starting Friday. Greater Hartford’s new phonebook is scheduled to be introduced in April. The remaining five regional directories will be released periodically between August and June 2002.

Besides the seven regional directories, SNET plans to publish 11 suburban directories to replace the 20 community directories now published.
