Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team capped the regular season by hosting a Senior Night battle with Bethel on February 17. Both teams entered into the contest with 7-5 marks in South-West Conference play, with playoff positioning on the line. The Nighthawks used a 14-0 run to erase a seven-point deficit late in the first half on the way to a 57-53 victory.

The Nighthawks earned the fourth seed and a quarterfinal round matchup at home with No 5 Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Wednesday, February 25 (game time set for 6:30 pm). Newtown won at Kolbe 67-62 during the regular slate. NHS Coach Matt Murphy noted that the win over Bethel puts his team in a really good spot. “We were treating this like a postseason game,” he added.

With the win, the Hawks enter into the playoffs riding some momentum and feeling confident.

“We’re firing on all cylinders,” Murphy said.

This team is loaded with veteran leadership. Seniors Quinn Velez, Aidan Walker, Luke Stewart, James Glynn, Quinn Kull, Teddy Moxham, Emmet Regan, and Marcus Gerace were all recognized and then went out and sparked a comeback in front of a huge crowd. The bleachers were packed and fans were treated to a battle that went down to the wire.

Down 29-22 late in the opening half, the Hawks closed the second quarter with three straight baskets as Walker scored twice and Glynn hit a shot. The momentum continued in the second half with eight more unanswered points. Walker hit a pair of 3-pointers and Stewart nailed a shot from long range as NHS outscored the Wildcats 15-9 in the period to carry a 43-38 lead into the fourth.

“That was huge,” Murphy said of the 14-0 run, which he added was made possible thanks to the Nighthawks throwing various defensive looks at the Wildcats.

Bethel hit a trio of fourth-quarter 3s to stay in the game. Newtown got seven points, including a 3-pointer from Stewart, five from Walker — who hit some clutch late free throws — and a two on a putback from Velez to fend off Bethel. The Wildcats pulled to within a point late in regulation. Walker came up big at the free throw line and came away with a steal to help seal things.

Walker finished with 28 points, including 15 on 3-pointers, and Stewart scored 14 to lead the offense. Moxham had four points, Regan three, and Glynn, Spencer Maddox, and Gerace all added two.

The Nighthawks defeated host Brookfield 74-41 on February 12 and defeated visiting Bassick of Bridgeport 70-62 on February 14.

Against Brookfield, Walker and Glynn both scored 14 points and Stewart dropped in 12 to lead the offense. Velez added seven, Maddox had six, Regan five, and Gerace two.

Against Bassick, Walker scored 27, Stewart and Maddox both had 11, and Velez eight to lead the offense. Stewart had nine rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals; Glynn logged five rebounds, four assists and two steals; Moxham had six rebounds and a steal; and Maddox grabbed five rebounds.

Murphy has known members of the senior class since coaching them at camps and in youth leagues. He said it is a great group of hard-working players, which is what prompted him to take the job in 2023. He looks forward to seeing what the team can do in the postseason.
