Newtown High School’s athletics department recognized Athletes of the Month for January. Basketball player Sam Diaspro and indoor track competitor Duncan Kolb were selected.

Sam Diaspro

Interests outside of sports: I enjoy doing graphic design.

College plans: Committed to play basketball at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., and plans to major in Digital Media/Communications.

Favorite part about playing basketball: The relationships I’ve formed with my coaches and teammates, and the life lessons I’ve learned from it.

What does it mean to be selected: With all of the talented athletes at our school, I appreciate being selected, and it motivates me to work harder.

From Coach Jeremy O’Connell: “Sam Diaspro is an absolute basketball junkie. She loves the game and loves working on her craft all of the time. She is a quiet player that lets her actions speak for her — she doesn’t need to say anything. She is a leader by nature with how hard she works, and a dream to coach.”

Duncan Kolb

Other sports: Runs cross country and outdoor track, and previously was a competitive swimmer.

Interests outside of sports: I play the violin.

College plans: Planning to study engineering (possibly mechanical or biomedical engineering). I want to run if I can, but academics come first.

Favorite part about running: Working hard and training together with my teammates and being able to see success together and our efforts pay off together.

What does it mean to be selected: Being selected to be athlete of the month is encouragement, knowing that what I am doing is working and that my hard work is seen.

From Coach David Warren: “Duncan is the definition of a true student-athlete. His dedication shows up every single day at practice, in the classroom, and beyond athletics. He approaches everything he does with intention, focus, and a commitment to being his best. At practice, Duncan is consistent, prepared, and coachable. His work ethic sets the standard for his teammates and makes those around him better. Outside of track, Duncan carries that same level of commitment into his academics and his passion for music, including his dedication to playing the violin. Whether it’s athletics, school, Duncan is fully invested, he’s all in and does it with a silent confidence. Duncan is a positive role model who represents our program and school the right way. His character, discipline, and balance make him incredibly deserving of being named athlete of the month.”
