Newtown’s guard and percussion groups participated in regional events February 16, and more competitions are scheduled for this upcoming weekend.

On Saturday, February 16, Newtown Junior Varsity Guard competed at New Milford High School in the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) competition with their show “It’s Coming.” The show is about a battle between good and evil and includes voice overs from the 2017 horror film It. They received a score of 66.95 and placed first in the Scholastic Middle School division.

Newtown Percussion performed in a non-judged exhibition along with three other local percussion groups at the New Milford MAC competition on February 16. Its show “Look Up,” explores how the moon is a uniting element for people everywhere. Saturday’s performance included the first three movements. The group is rehearsing movement four.

Newtown Varsity Guard performed its show “Hypnosis” at the World Guard International (WGI) competition in Salem, Mass., on Saturday, February 16. The regional competition included schools from New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Newtown competed in the Scholastic A division. Preliminaries were held in the morning and early afternoon, followed by the finals in the evening. Newtown received a score of 66.83 in the preliminaries and a score of 68.06 in the finals, placing eleventh in the competition.

All three Newtown teams (sub-groups of Newtown High School Marching Band & Guard) will compete at the MAC competition at Bunnell High School in Stratford on Saturday, February 23. Currently, 17 guard groups and 12 percussion groups are slated to perform at that event.
