Reminder From Town Officials: Remain Vigilant, Stay Safe
Town officials have issued a reminder to all Newtown residents, asking them to continue staying safe as a major snow storm works across the region.
Newtown Emergency Management Team says snow will continue to fall with intensity for several more hours with additional accumulation.
“Our town's Public Works crews have been working since the storm began to try to keep up with the impressive snowfall intensity — their primary objective is to establish and maintain access for emergency response vehicles,” according to the statement issued around 4:45 am February 23.
A National Weather Service Blizzard Warning remains in effect over Newtown and much of the region until 6 pm tonight. Additional snow accumulations between 9 and 14 inches are possible, with winds gusting as high as 55 mph, according to the weather service.
Heavy snow could continue until 4 pm. The snow could be heavy at times.
While accumulations aren’t currently being offered for Newtown, NWS is reporting Danbury has received 20 inches of heavy snow as of 11 am and Waterbury-Oxford Airport is reporting 13 inches.
“Residents are urged to stay off the roads for their own safety as well as for others,” the Emergency Management Team also noted in its morning brief.
Governor Lamont yesterday signed an emergency order prohibiting all commercial vehicles from traveling on all limited access highways statewide as of 5 pm Sunday. That commercial vehicle ban is still in effect.
Those who lost electrical power should notify Eversource at 800-286-2000 and preferably should stay home, as that will be the safest place for them for now.
Those with generators for emergency power are asked to “remember to operate the generator outdoors and away from the house,” the team said.
If anyone is experiencing an emergency, they should call 911.
“Our first responders remain available for emergencies. As the storm progresses and winds calm down, there will be an assessment regarding the need for any warming centers/charging centers and if it is safe to do so. If a center is opened, notification for the location and time will be released. At this time, the safest action for residents to take is to stay home/off the roads.”
Those who must move to a warm location are reminded the Police Department’s Community Room at 191 South Main Street is available 24/7, the team offered.
“As with all of the preparedness messaging sent by Newtown’s First Selectman and the Emergency Management Office, we remind residents to please check on any elderly or frail neighbors to be certain they are doing OK in this weather,” they said.
They reiterated, however, “please do not drive during and immediately after the snowstorm, for your own safety and to allow Town and State crews to safely clear roadways. Please remember to keep fire lanes clear, and please shovel out fire hydrants once it is safe to do so,” the Emergency Management Team stated.
Schools and Town offices are closed today.
Updated information, when available, will be posted on the Town’s website and will be sent out via News and Announcements. Town leaders “encourage all residents to sign up for notifications from that system,” the statement said. “We will also be updating the town’s Facebook page as well as working with The Newtown Bee to provide updates. The Code Red emergency notification system is only used for sending information regarding immediate emergencies and will not be used to provide general updates.”
If there is a Life Safety Emergency, call 911. For power outages, contact Eversource at 800-286-2000 or www.eversource.com. Connecticut’s free information and referral service is available by calling 211 or visiting www.211ct.org.
