First Selectman Bruce Walczak has issued his latest storm update.

Released at 4:30 pm Monday, Walczak’s statement notes the storm “has eased a little, mostly because the winds aren’t quite as strong as expected, but with the wind chill it still feels like about 10 degrees. If you need to step outside, please take extra care — it’s bitter out there.”

Eversource is reporting around ten homes without power in Newtown. The first selectman says utility crews are in town, “actively addressing the outages,” and the number will change as crews continue their work.

Those who need to contact Eversource can call 800-286-2000, he said.

“Road conditions remain rough with the steady snowfall all day. Please stay off the roads this evening unless it’s truly an emergency. Our Public Works team has been out nonstop, though a few of our trucks are temporarily down,” his update continued. “Some driveways may have been blocked as plows worked to keep the roads open — they will return to clear them as soon as they can. If your driveway is blocked by town plows, you can call Public Works at 203-270-4300.”

Crews will continue working through the night, according to Walczak. He also reminds residents that those working on roads will need short breaks “to rest so they can keep going strong in the morning.”

Municipal and Board of Education buildings will open at 11 am Tuesday, February 24. Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, he said.

“Above all, please take care of yourselves and each other. Your safety matters more than anything,” Walczak’s statement concluded.

First Selectman Bruce Walczak has issued his latest storm update. Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, and municipal buildings will open late, according to the notes.
