Old-Fashioned Family Fun Day
Old-Fashioned Family Fun Day
The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School of Newtown will host a special community event, âOld-Fashioned Family Fun Day,â at Borders Books & Music on Saturday, March 10, from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
The day will be filled with a lot of wholesome fun for the entire family. The dayâs activities include:
* At 10 am, The Snow Maiden puppet play will be presented. The magical Russian fairy tale will be performed by early childhood teachers Amy Thacker and Ellen McRobert using silks and handmade Waldorf-style puppets.
* At 11:30 am, there will be beeswax candle decorating led by first grade teacher Janelle Beardsley, with assistance from the first grade. Beeswax is a fragrant, colorful natural substance, which softens with the warmth of the hands so that it can be formed into beautiful decorations.
* At 1 pm, a recorder ensemble performance by 6-7 grade students will be directed by 6-7 grade teacher Ann Sagarin, featuring music from the Renaissance and classical composers.
* At 2 pm, second puppet play will be presented. Lady Spring, an early spring nature story, will be performed by Megan Lutz, playgroup teacher; it was written by Melissa Merkling, administrator. Colorful silks and handmade Waldorf-style puppets will be featured.
The beeswax candle decorating program will be repeated at 3 pm. Also, a Walford Artwork display will be on view all day. Children in all grades in Waldorf schools painted with watercolors using wet paper, leading into a deep experience of the essence of color.
According to event coordinator and HVS parent Carolyn Parrs Weinberg, âThis is one of our favorite ways that our Waldorf school enjoys reaching out to the community. Children of all ages are captured by the magic of our puppet plays, or engage their artists within by creating a beeswax candle in a multitude of warm and wintry colors.â
âThe day is purposely filled with good old-fashioned family fun, something thatâs often missing in this high-tech world we live in,â she continued.
