And that would fit quite nicely with that other trademark of the Nighthawks – the come-from-behind rally.

A slow start.

A rally.

With the ‘Hawks, those two things go hand-in-hand and those two things pretty much defined the 63-51 win over Bristol Central on Monday night (at Newtown High) in the first round of the CIAC Class LL state tournament.

Newtown entered the tournament at 16-4, ranked No. 8 in Class LL, whereas the Rams entered the tournament at 10-10, ranked No. 25.

But the game didn’t flesh out like a meeting between the No. 8 and No. 25 teams should – at least, not at first.

After a quick, 2-0, lead thanks to a pair of free throws by Amanda Marsilio, the ‘Hawks simply befuddled themselves with some weak shooting and a series of turnovers that helped the Rams build up a seven-point lead, 19-12, by the close of the first period.

If it weren’t for a pair of spot up jumpers by Morgan Haines, things could have been even worse.

The rally started in the early stages of the second quarter, when Lisa Masella dropped in a basket and added a foul shot to trim the Bristol Central lead to four. Masella came back later with two more post baskets to keep get the ‘Hawks to within one when Kelley Haines hit a jumper with 1:36 to go in the half to give Newtown the lead, 27-26.

The Rams wrested the lead away, briefly, but Masella bounced another shot off the glass, Haines added a jumper, and Masella (who scored 15 points on the night, 14 of those in the first half) chimed in with a pair of free throws to give the ‘Hawks a 33-30 lead at the break.

The ‘Hawks lost the lead just once in the third quarter, on one of  the four three-pointers the Rams canned on the night. Thanks to Kelley Haines, though, the ‘Hawks quickly reclaimed control of the game.

Haines, a freshman, had the best game of her short varsity career, finishing with a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists. She scored six of her 10 points right in a row, bringing the ‘Hawks from a one-point deficit to a five-point lead.

The Rams got a little close, trimming the Newtown lead to just one, but then Lori Iwanicki was ready. The junior forward – who led all scorers with 18 points on the night – proceeded to score 15 of the next 17 points for Newtown (Marsilio broke up the string with a short putback) as the ‘Hawks opened up a 10-point lead late in the fourth quarter.

Ally Gellert, who played a strong defensive game despite being watched (and whistled) closely by the officials, added a pair of free throws and Kelley Haines finished things off with a pair of her free throws.

The win gave the ‘Hawks (17-4) the opportunity to host No. 9 Rockville (16-5) on Wednesday night (after press time) in the second-round of the CIAC Class LL tournament. Rockville pinned a 47-44 loss on No. 24 Mercy of Middletown (10-10) on Monday.

The winner of the Newtown – Rockville game gets the somewhat dubious pleasure of meeting the winner of the Norwich Free Academy (No. 1, 20-0) – Hamden (No. 17, 13-8) game on Friday, March 2, in the CIAC Class LL quarter-finals.

NOTES: The Newtown and Bristol Central were a combined 24-for-29 from the free throw line . . . Masella hit her first five free throws before finally missing . . . Marsilio, Morgan Haines, and Iwanicki are all within mere percentage points away from one another in a race for The Newtown Bee free throw shooting award.
