Don't Allow A Forced Vote On Projects
Donât Allow A Forced Vote On Projects
To the Editor:
Why is that while politicians court our votes, we are lauded for our intelligence in voting for them, yet once elected, we are assumed to show minimal, if any brainpower? On 2/20/01 Herbert Rosenthal, our first selectman, wrote The Newtown Bee complaining, among other things, that The Beeâs editorial of 2/16/01 ââ¦was very premature. Neither the Board of Selectman nor the Board of Education has made a request to the Legislative Council for an appropriation to fund either project at this time.â We are of course referring to the proposed construction of a 5/6 school and the purchase of Fairfield Hills. Ok, Iâm sure he is technically correct, but let me be the first to congratulate The Bee on having a crystal ball that foresaw the first selectmanâs budget proposal on 2/22/01 that included just such a request!
I continue to be adamantly opposed to the townâs purchase of Fairfield Hills. There have been plenty of articles highlighting the debt issues, the cost of environmental cleanups, the townâs previous purchase of property that continues to sit idle and deteriorate, and lastly, that we have no skills or business at being landlords. However, equally important is making sure that we do not allow ourselves to be forced into voting for a budget because our political leaders lack the integrity and confidence in their constituents to make the right decision. Shame on us for voting them in, but shame on us again if we allow them to force our votes on this upcoming budget.
