A False Impression
A False Impression
To the Editor:
I am writing in response to the letter written by Mrs Whitaker in last weekâs edition of the Newtown Bee.
As a ninth grader who also enjoys learning, I was very upset to hear that she had been receiving many false impressions of Newtown High School. I think the seriousness of the situation has been exaggerated. I have not observed many of the things Mrs Whitaker had been told by her babysitter. I am not afraid to attend school and I do not have any friends who are uncomfortable attending school either. The teaching staff is excellent and professional. I have not been in a class where a teacher has used profanity. There are rules at the high school and the teachers and other staff members continually enforce them. The students are friendly and involved in sports and their community.
I understand there are students who take drugs and smoke; however, every school in America has students who take part in these activities. I am not saying it is right, I am simply saying it occurs everywhere.
Graduates of Newtown high School have gone on to many great colleges, winning countless leadership awards and completing many hours of community service. This obviously reflects the dedication and encouragement of the staff at our school. The teachers really do care, as do guidance counselors and the administrators at Newtown High. It is unfortunate that people have allowed the actions of a few students to paint a negative image for many. I assure you, Mrs Whitaker, that as long as your children are involved in any of the many activities the high school offers, their high school experience will be a valuable one.
