SOUTHBURY â Anyone interested in nature and the environment is cordially invited to attend any one of four welcome meetings at the barn at the Audubon Center at Bent of the River, scheduled for Sundays, March 7 and 21 and April 4 and 8. The barn will be open from 2 to 4 pm on each of those days.
An Audubon staff member or volunteer will be present to orient newcomers, acquaint them with the Audubon Center and answer questions. Hot coffee, tea and cocoa will be provided.
Bent of the River, a 650-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature education center owned and managed by National Audubon Society, is at 185 East Flat Hill Road in South Britain, about a half mile from Connecticut Route 172 and about one mile from I-84 Exit 14.
The centerâs grounds and trails are open to visitors daily during daylight hours. Trail maps and program information are available in the Welcome Kiosk located near the visitorsâ parking area.
The historic barn is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
The Bent is home to more than 275 species of birds, mammals, butterflies, and amphibians. The grounds are also host to a rich diversity of tree and plant life and a rare juxtaposition of the three main types of rocks â metamorphic, sedimentary, igneous.
