Motorist Charged In Dual Pedestrian Accident

Police this week charged a local woman with a motor vehicle infraction stemming from a February 11 accident, in which the auto she was driving on Boggs Hill Road struck, knocked down, and injured two town road crew workers, who were stationed there to direct traffic for a tree-trimming project.
Sergeant John Cole said February 23 that police charged Helen Gulalo, 80, of 41 Hattertown Road with one count of failure to avoid colliding with a pedestrian.
The violation carries a $75 fine, which is payable by mail. If Ms Gulalo chooses to contest the charge, she may appear in Danbury Superior Court on March 4 to do so, the sergeant said. Patrol Officer Jason Flynn investigated the accident.
Sergeant Cole said the police investigation into the accident indicated that Ms Gulalo did not see the two town road crew members whom she struck while driving southward in a 1995 Subaru Legacy.
âIt was an accident,â Sgt Cole said. Police issued the infraction because Ms Gulalo âdid not exercise due care,â the sergeant said. The road crew workers were wearing high-visibility garb and were within a posted roadwork zone when the accident occurred.
Both injured men were treated for their injuries at Danbury Hospital and then released.
The Subaru struck the men while they were directing traffic at a tree-trimming job at the driveway entrance to Head Oâ Meadow School at about 1 pm, February 11. A third member of the five-man work crew reportedly narrowly escaped injury by darting out of the way of the oncoming auto.
Injured were road crew members George Birch, 58, of 9 Baldwin Road, and Raymond Peck, 57, of 23 Philo Curtis Road. Mr Birch received head cuts in the accident, and Mr Peck received a broken leg.
Labor on roadways is dangerous work, Public Works Director Fred Hurley has said of the accident, noting that the men could have been more seriously injured or even killed.
Police spent about one hour at the accident scene collecting evidence. Dodgingtown and Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters responded to the accident, as did the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
