The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.
 Newtown Newcomersâ Club Recognition Scholarship â a $500 recognition scholarship to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who is a ânewcomerâ to the NHS community and has made a positive impact on school and/or community. Applicants must have moved into Newtown and/or NHS during their junior or senior year of high school and have made a positive impact on their school or community. Applications are available in the Career Center. Deadline is April 15.
Glenn Moon Scholarship Fund (Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut, Inc) â for all 2004 graduates of Connecticut high schools, public or private, who have a serious intention to pursue a career in teaching in public or private schools, hopefully in Connecticut. Personal and educational qualifications will be evaluated as follows: 1) scholarship record (transcript, class standing, SAT scores), 2) financial need, 3) character and personality, and 4) interests and educational activities. The main scholarship award is $1,500 for the first year. Additional awards of $1,500 will be granted for each of the subsequent three years, provided all qualifications continue to be met. Three scholarships for one year each will also be awarded. Forms are available at www.artcinc.org. Deadline is March 31.
 The Associated General Contractors of Connecticut, Inc â This is a two-year scholarship program with a total value of $5,000 per recipient. The scholarship provides $2,500 for both freshman and sophomore years of college tuition and two summers of related work experience with an AGC contractor. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors entering a four-year building technology or civil engineering program as a freshman, or entering a two-year technical school with a construction course of study, with the intent of entering a four-year college. Deadline is March 31.
 USS Connecticut Scholarship Program â This scholarship program was named for the State of Connecticutâs Flagship vessel, the submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22). The ship presents several scholarships every year to eligible members of the present and past crew or their dependents as well as eligible citizens of the state who plan to study at a Connecticut college or university. Last year 16 merit scholarships were awarded: seven to dependents of the members of the shipâs crew, and nine to citizens of the state who planned to attend college in Connecticut. All scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic scholarship and merit demonstrated by involvement in relevant academic, civic, professional, and cultural organizations.  Disabled Workersâ Scholarship â a $10,000 four-year annual scholarship is available to assist a Connecticut high school student who is planning to attend college and is the child of a worker totally disabled worker because of injury that occurred in the workplace. The student must demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need. Applications and more information are available in the Career Center. The application along with a 500-word essay is due no later than March 30.
 Scholastic Scholarship Contest â high school juniors and seniors in the United States are eligible to compete for 17 national scholarships that total $35,000. The two grand prizewinners will receive a $15,000 savings bond for college tuition costs. Applicants will be judged on the basis of creativity, clear content, logical thought process and proper use of language in an original 500-word essay. Essays and applications must be submitted by April 26.
