Sara Kelley had the hot hand for the Newtown girls’ sixth-grade travel basketball team (that’s the Lady Hawks), averaging 12.67 points for three games. Unfortunately, the Lady Hawks won just one of those games.

For the Newtown boys’ sixth-grade travel team, Daniel Lynch hit a pair of three-pointers to force two overtime periods in a win over Westport.

Here are the travel results:

Boys 8th –

 

Danbury 70, Newtown 55 –  Greg Rodden and Kevin Troy combined for 32 points in the loss. Jason Smith, Mike Maher and Bob Lapple played fine overall games.

Boys 7th –

Newtown 43, New Milford 40 – Newtown jumped out to a 13-point lead by the end of the third quarter and then withstood a furious comeback attempt by New Milford to hold the lead. All nine players scored on the day to earn Newtown its 14th win. David Bray and John Grimaldi combined for 16 points to lead all Newtown scorers. Cole Depuy and Kurt Nacewicz chipped in six points each as Dan Quinn and Ian Copper added five points each.

Girls 6th –

New Canaan 33, Newtown 25 – Sara Kelley scored 13 points while Jennifer Dailey added six as the Lady Hawks dropped a close one. Kaitlin Marsden chipped in four points and Kristen Tanner added a bucket.  Susan Mason ripped down 12 rebounds for the Lady Hawks.

Newtown 45, Fairfield 17 – Sara Kelley scored 13 points while Kate Bowen added nine to lead the Lady Hawks to an easy win. Jennifer Daily, Nicole Elias and Carolyn Fagan combined for 15 points. Ally Modzelewski, Kristen Tanner and Stephanie Suhoza led the defensive charge while Nicole Elias, Kaitlin Marsden and Susan Mason each had 10 rebounds to control the boards for Newtown.

Fairfield Knights 30, Newtown 25 – Sara Kelley scored 12 points (with 6-of-10 shooting from the foul line), but the Lady Hawks fell to the Knights of Fairfield. Nicole Elias chipped in four points while Stephanie Suhoza and Susan Mason were strong off the boards for the Lady Hawks.

Boys 6th -

 

Newtown 34, New Canaan 33 – Casey Tenney and Ralph Sergiovanni each canned seven points to lead a balanced Newtown offense. Kyle Kromberg (four points, three steals), Jeff DiNicola (four points, four rebounds) and Ryan Schmidt (four points, two steals) also played well.

Danbury 48 Newtown 42 – George Zaruba and Peter Young scored 11 points each in the loss. Zaruba (six rebounds, four steals) and Nicky Tarantino (four points, two steals) also had solid defensive games. Andy Lapple kicked in seven points and three rebounds.

Newtown 54, Westport 48 – Daniel Lynch made two spectacular desperation three pointers to force two OTs and Ralph Sergiovanni had a big game with 14 points and 10 rebounds in a thrilling win over Westport. Andy Lapple also canned 14 points and Kyle Kromberg added eight points and two key steals in helping the Hawks seal the victory.

Newtown 60, Redding 28 – Andy Lapple led the Hawks with nine points, five rebounds and two steals in a dominating team performance. George Zaruba (12 points, six rebounds), Ryan Schmidt (four points, four rebounds), Nicky Tarantino (six points) and Jeff DiNicola (seven points) had great floor games as well.

Newtown 51, Westport 41 – Andy Lapple  scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Newtown to the win. Casey Tenney (seven points), George Zaruba (nine points, seven steals) and Daniel Lynch (nine points, six rebounds) had excellent all-around games.

Boys 5th –

Newtown 44, Bethel 28 –

Josh Engler scored 11 points (with 7-of-10 shooting from the foul line) as Newtown avenged an earlier defeat at the hands of neighboring Bethel. Engler also grabbed seven rebounds and made six steals.  Robert Carroll led all rebounders with nine boards. Andrew Oravecz and Sean Maher each chipped in eight points and RJ Roman had four assists.
