Girl Scouts Planning 95th Anniversary

The nearly 700 Girl Scouts of Newtown will celebrate the 95th anniversary of Girl Scouting in America with a multi-event celebration kicking off on March 11.

An all-family dance, “Making Beautiful Music Together,” will be held at Reed School from 2 to 4 pm that afternoon. The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Girl Scout Council of Southwestern Connecticut, of which Newtown is a Service Unit. The event is open to the public; cost is $25.95 at the door for a family of four. The event will offer dancing to music from the last 95 years from ragtime in 1912 through the Roaring 20s, Boogie Woogie from the war era, rock of the 1950s, psychedelic sounds of 1960s, disco 70s, big hair 80s, hip hop 90s, and music of today.

Families are encouraged to dress in their favorite decade duds. Best Dressed Family will win a family portrait courtesy of Tom Allen Photography. The event will also feature a silent auction with music themed baskets, compiled from donations from troops from every Newtown school as well as local businesses.

In April, mothers and daughters will learn the fine art of jewelry making with a “How to Bead” seminar conducted by June Richardson, owner of Beadazzled creations in Fairfield.

In May, each of the 64 Girl Scout troops in Newtown will design and create a square to be used to make a 95th Girl Scout Anniversary commemorative quilt, which the Girl Scouts will eventually put on public display.

The celebration will conclude with a Girl Scout Sing-A-Long on June 10, to coincide with the national Girl Scout Sing-A-Long which will take place the same weekend at the mall in Washington, D.C. The Newtown Girl Scout Sing-A-Long is open to all Girl Scouts past and present and will take place from 2 to 4 pm at a location to be determined.
