JUDGMENT AWAITED IN TRIAL OVER FISK COLLECTION OF O’KEEFFE WORKS

AVV 2-23 #729985

NASHVILLE, TENN. (AP) — A trial to decide if Fisk University can keep its prized art collection donated by painter Georgia O’Keeffe has ended and the judge will rule later.

In closing arguments, lawyers for the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum argued the school lost the right to the artwork when it tried to sell the collection and took it off display.

Museum lawyer Bill Harbison told a Nashville judge that the historically black school has held the 101-piece collection “hostage in an effort to monetize it.’’

Fisk responded that it never tried to sell the whole collection and says it now has the money to properly display the works according to the artist’s wishes.

Chancellor Ellen Hobbs Lyle said she would issue a ruling within 30 days.
