Native Of Newtown

Denis C. Thompson, 68, of Plainville, died March 2, at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Mary (Pratt) Thompson. He was born in Milford, March 3, 1942, one of three sons of Dorothy (Dobson) and Henry Thompson. His first wife, Ruth (Swenson) Thompson, predeceased him in 2006.

Raised in Newtown, he was a 1960 graduate of Newtown High School, and went on to graduate from UConn in 1964. Mr Thompson had a longtime career in commercial insurance as an executive at Aetna Life and Casualty, as well as Trumbull Services, a subsidiary of The Hartford. 

He and Ruth were devoted to the Plainville Little League. He was recently credited for his volunteerism with the renovated field named in his honor, and was currently serving as a member of the Plainville Parks and Recreation Department. A car enthusiast, he was known for his rotating fleet of vehicles, and had a passion for UConn basketball. 

In addition to his wife, Mary, he leaves his two children, Henry Thompson, and Ruth Thompson Mann, and her husband Jonathan; a grandson; two brothers and their wives; and several other relatives.

A celebration of Mr Thompson’s life will be held Saturday, March 5, at 10 am, at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad Street, Plainville. Committal services will follow at West Cemetery. Family and friends may gather Friday evening, March 4, from 4 to 7 pm, at the funeral home.
