Grant Will Expand Youth Services Campaign
Newtown Youth & Family Servicesâ Youth Advisory Board (YAB) was awarded a $500 grant from the Youth Development Training and Resource Center of New Haven.
 âBeing awarded this generous grant will enable the YAB to complete a âSticker Shockâ campaign six times this year,â said Jessi Zeigler, outreach manager.
A Sticker Shock campaign is designed to educate the liquor permittees in Newtown about the liquor laws by providing visual reinforcements. Liquor permittees will also be provided with informational brochures to hand out to consumers with each purchase. This will repeatedly expose permittees and adults to underage drinking laws.
YAB is a community service group of high school students. Group leaders and Newtown High School seniors Tina Hartlett and Steph Villa wrote the grant application with the assistance of Ms Zeigler and NPC grant coordinator Amanda Walsh.
The YAB supports NYFS activities throughout the year, including visits to local nursing homes, the annual Holiday Festival, car washes, Independent Living Day, Halloween âSpookatorium,â gift baskets for needy families, and Christmas caroling.
Newtown Youth & Family Services combines clinical services and positive youth development programs to provide a continuum of care to residents of the greater Newtown area.
The agency continues to expand its service offerings, which include outpatient individual, couple, and family counseling and substance abuse treatment services. In addition, NYFS offers prevention initiatives, after school, evening, and weekend programs, as well as support groups to promote individual and community wellness.
