The Sandy Hook 5K, referred to as the Sandy Hook Run for Families a year ago, will once again be held, this time in the town the event benefits. The Saturday, March 29, race will begin 8:15 am on the campus of Fairfield Hills and will feature a 5K run/ fitness walk, as well as a fun run for children ages 2–11. Runners and walkers of all abilities and families with strollers are welcome.

Registration fees from the event and fundraising will be donated to the Newtown Memorial Fund. A limited number of runners will be able to participate at the onsite event; however, for those who are unable to participate in Newtown but would like to be a part of this fundraising effort, a “Virtual Runner” option is offered. This option will allow an unlimited number of individuals to register and run in their local areas on March 29 in honor of Newtown. Participants registered through the virtual option will receive a T-shirt and racer’s bib.

“The response to last year’s event was so overwhelming. We wanted to make sure the meaning behind this event continued on so that the running community could continue to show its support for the families of Newtown,” said Katie Blake who is returning to organize the 2014 event, organized by a committee of all volunteers.

The event website at 5krunforshf.org will have the latest regarding registration and race day information as it becomes available.
