Betty Joan (Smith) Holey, 90, died February 9, in Black Mountain, N.C. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on October 17, 1926, she was the second oldest of five girls born to the late Eunice (Lauer) and Grant Harold Smith.

She married Robert Emerson Holey of Toledo on August 21, 1948. They resided in Freeport, Ill., for 28 years, except for a three-year period in Newtown, from 1973 to 1976. In 1980, they moved to Asheville, N.C.

Mrs Holey was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a faithful and dedicated member of her church families at Newtown United Methodist, Embury United Methodist in Freeport, Ill.; and St Paul's United Methodist in Asheville.

She was also active in civic and social causes.

Her sons and their wives, John and Dianne of Lafayette, Calif., and Mark and Michaela of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; her daughter, Carole Fogal of Asheville, N.C.; and her seven beloved grandchildren survive Mrs Holey. She lost her beloved husband in 2014 when he died on the very same date. Her parents and her sisters, Arletta Howe; Miriam Freels; Mildred Thomas; and Jean Dennis, also predeceased her.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be conducted on Saturday, April 8, at the St Paul's United Methodist Church, 223 Hillside Street, Asheville, N.C. The service will begin at 2 pm and be followed by a reception in the church's Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in memory of Betty Holey to the Treasurer PEO International Headquarters, Educational Loan Fund, 3700 Grand Avenue, Des Moines Iowa 50312.
