GBYO To Perform Annual

Young People’s Concert March 15

FAIRFIELD — The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestra (GBYO) will perform its annual Young People’s Concert on Saturday, March 15, at 11:30 am, at Roger Ludlowe Middle School, 689 Unquowa Road.

The narrated concert, especially suited for children in grades K-5 and their parents, will demonstrate the Latin roots in music. Audience members will discover, experience and “play” the rhythms during this interactive concert.

The Principal Orchestra, the most advanced of the four GBYO orchestras and under the direction of GBYO Music Director Theresa Diaz McGee, will perform highlights from Leonard Bernstein’s award winning musical West Side Story. Additional works will include the exciting gypsy “Ritual Fire Dance” from Spanish composer Manuel de Falla’s ballet, El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician).

Founded in 1961 the GBYO, with four developmentally sequential orchestras, offers musical experiences for young musicians in the area. The 245 members in the four ensembles were chosen by competitive auditions in late August. The members, in grades 4-12, reside in 25 communities in Fairfield and New Haven counties.

Tickets for the concert are $6 for adults and $4 for students and may be purchased at the Roger Ludlowe Middle School on the day of performance or by contacting the GBYO Executive Director Barbara Upton at 203-459-4249. For additional information about the orchestras visit gbyo.org.
