Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*AARP TAX ASSISTANCE, appointments only on Mondays through April from 9 am to noon. Bring last year’s tax return and all other pertinent information. Call 270-4310 for an appointment.

*SENIOR CENTER TEA on Monday, March 10, at 2 pm, will feature a discussion on the New Senior Center. Be a part of the planning. Call 270-4311 to reserve a seat.

*POT LUCK dinner will be Tuesday, March 11, from 4 to 6 pm. Bring a dessert or an appetizer to share. Cost is $5. Call Friday to RSVP.

*BINGO will be Wednesday, March 12, 19 and 26 at 1 pm.

*LARRY AYCE is back on Thursday, March 13, at 1:30 pm to sing our winter doldrums away

*ST PATTY’S DAY CELEBRATION at Chez Josef on Friday, March 14. Enjoy a corned beef and cabbage dinner and an Irish extravaganza of Irish music and comedy.

*The COMMISSION ON AGING will meet at the Senior Center every third Monday of the month, at 5 pm.

*Applying for SENIOR TAX RELIEF BENEFIT? Attend one of these dates: March 18 or April 9, from 9 am to noon; or March 26, 1 to 4 pm, with your 2007 tax return, Social Security 1099, and all other 1099s for pension, etc.

*AARP 55 ALIVE mature driving course for Thursday, March 27, and Friday, March 28, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Must attend both classes. Fee is $10.

*Friday, April 4, 10:30 am, Frances Hendrickson will talk on the “QUILTS OF VALOR” project, which brings a comfort quilt to every wounded service person returning from the war on terror. Visit website www.govf.org to read about it.

*Rudy’s Beau Rivage presents: FRANK SINATRA MEETS LOUIE PRIMA on Thursday, April 10, with a luncheon and entertainment by Jerry Cardone and Jimmy Merchant plus the Harvest Moon Ballroom Orchestra. Depart at 10:15 am; cost is $70 per person.

*American Ballet Theatre presents SWAN LAKE. Depart 9:30 am on Saturday, May 31, to New York City and enjoy lunch and the ballet Swan Lake. Cost is $150.

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

March 10-14

Monday: Chicken piccata, rice, Oriental blend vegetables, wheat bread, cranapple juice, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday: Pasta faioli with crackers, Southern breaded fish with tartar sauce, rye bread OR sliced turkey on rye with cranberry sauce, tater tots & ketchup, peas & onions, pears.

Wednesday: Pork chops with applesauce garnish, scalloped potato, french green beans, wheat dinner roll, apple pie.

Thursday: Hungarian goulash served over egg noodles, broccoli & cauliflower mix, pumpernickel bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: March 17: St Patrick’s Day Special: Corned beef and cabbage, boiled red potatoes, diced carrots, Irish soda bread, Leprechaun cake.

Tuesday: March 18: Black bean soup with crackers, thinly sliced steak, mashed squash, garden peas, wheat bread, fudge brownie.
