An Artful Life

Sara Elise Kuperman, 92, was called “Lila” from the day of her birth, June 4, 1931, in Santa Fe, Argentina. Her parents, Noah Kuperman and Sima Polansky Kuperman, were refugees from war-torn and pogrom-infested Eastern Europe. Lila learned from them the dangers of anti-Semitism, which she fought as a researcher for the Anti-Defamation League in New York City, where she emigrated as a young woman. She also worked for the Ford Foundation before becoming a bilingual guidance counselor in New York City.

Her artful life began as a girl in Argentina and continued throughout her long and fascinating journey; she studied at the Art Students League. She had a one-woman show at Masonicare in Newtown, where she lived until her death on March 5, 2023.

She is survived by her only son, Joseph Kugielsky of Newtown, daughter-in-law Anne Kugielsky, and three grandsons, Benjamin of Newtown, David of Bloomfield, N.J., and Noah of Tacoma, Washington. Lila delighted in her great-granddaughter, Evelyn Kugielsky, who was born February, 4, 2021.

A graveside service was held March 7 at The Village Cemetery in Newtown.
